Chapter 98
Chapter 98
“Yi Weichun…”
The smile on York’s face gradually sank.
That name was not common.
He subconsciously began to scrutinize the woman in front of him. Although she wore a smile, there was no warmth in her eyes; the expression was far too formulaic, as if even the curve of her lips had been meticulously designed.
Most coincidences in this world were not coincidences at all.
What was her goal?
“That name sounds a bit familiar.” He withdrew his hand, speaking with a faint, knowing smile. “I once knew someone who was also named Yi Weichun.”
“Really?” Tu Nan’s eyes widened. With a look of pleasant surprise, she grabbed his hand. “You really knew her?”
York looked at her suspiciously.
Tu Nan lowered her eyes. When she looked up again, her eyes were slightly misted. She let out a sigh. “Yi Weichun was my sister. A year ago, she said she was coming to Fairy Tale Hospital to work as a nurse, but she was never heard from again…”
“My sister and I grew up together; we were all each other had. Of course I had to come looking for her.” She wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes. “After coming here, I discovered that Sister… Sister had already…”
She broke into sobs.
The suspicion in York’s eyes faded slightly, yet he remained puzzled. “Then why did you say your name is Yi Weichun?”
“My sister has been gone for a year, and I was afraid she had been forgotten,” Tu Nan choked out. “I swore to live on using her name so that she would live in my heart forever.”
“So that’s how it is.” York looked at her tearful eyes, and his gaze softened.
But behind that facade of softness, a certain flame of excitement flickered faintly.
“You truly are a kind and strong girl,” he said pityingly.
Tu Nan lowered her head slightly, a hint of mockery flashing through her eyes.
She knew exactly what kind of girls York liked.
“You mentioned just now that you knew my sister?” She suppressed the emotions in her eyes and looked up to ask, “Then, do you know the cause of her death?”
“Good girl,” York said softly. “I think we need a different setting to talk. Perhaps this afternoon, you can come… to the rooftop to find me.”
Tu Nan paused for a moment.
“That would be wonderful,” she said gratefully. “I will definitely be there.”
*
Things were going even more smoothly than she had imagined.
It wasn’t hard to guess what York wanted to do.
He wanted her to know that Yi Weichun hadn’t committed suicide but had met a violent end, plunging her into pain and hatred.
However, since she intended to recreate the scene of Yi Weichun’s death, York alone wouldn’t be enough.
The problem was how to get He Ling to the rooftop as well.
For that, she would have to rely on Priestley.
Even in the dream, He Ling subconsciously followed the Rules.
If Priestley required her to go to the rooftop in the afternoon, He Ling would have no choice but to go, even if she was unwilling in her heart.
Throughout the entire lunch break, He Ling was restless and uneasy.
She didn’t understand why the Dean had suddenly requested her presence on the rooftop.
Ever since Weichun died, she had never stepped foot on that terrace again.
Even though she had dreamed of it countless times.
Every time, she was filled with immense regret.
Upon waking, there was only endless pain and remorse.
“Are you alright?” Tu Nan glanced at her with concern and handed her a glass of warm water. “You look like you’re in a bad state.”
He Ling bit her finger neurotically, her eyes wide and staring.
Tu Nan began to worry about her mental state.
Yi Weichun had died an accidental death; now it seemed it must be related to He Ling.
In fact, there was a high probability that He Ling had personally caused Yi Weichun’s death.
York could not be trusted. From the very beginning, Tu Nan had never intended to rely solely on him to uncover the truth of the incident.
The man was full of lies; there was no telling when he might stab her in the back.
She wanted to recreate the scene from that day, hoping it might provoke He Ling into revealing something.
However, returning to the site of the tragedy might be too much for He Ling. There was no guarantee that her intense emotions wouldn’t cause the dreamscape to shatter again.
Tu Nan found herself in a dilemma.
As she hesitated, a nurse walked over from the direction of the wards.
The nurse stretched and sat down beside them, looking exhausted.
“What’s wrong with He Ling?” the nurse asked in surprise after noticing He Ling’s strange state.
“She probably experienced some kind of shock,” Tu Nan said vaguely.
“What kind of shock could scare her like this?” The nurse looked at He Ling curiously. “She’s drenched in sweat. It looks like she’s been through quite a fright.”
Suddenly, He Ling clutched her head and began to scream.
Everyone nearby jumped in alarm.
“She’s going to scare the other patients acting like this,” the nurse said anxiously. “Noises are prohibited near the wards. We have to quiet her down immediately.”
“Give her some medicine to calm her down.”
Someone nearby made the suggestion.
Tu Nan paused.
That was actually a good idea.
Calming He Ling down would help maintain the stability of the dreamscape.
It would also prevent her from becoming too agitated later in the afternoon.
After taking the medicine, He Ling did indeed quiet down significantly, eventually falling into a deep sleep with her head resting on the table.
When the time for her appointment with York arrived, Tu Nan stood up first. After asking the nurse to wake He Ling in a while, she headed up to the rooftop alone.
*
York was already there.
He was standing at the edge of the rooftop, staring out at something.
Hearing the sound of her arrival, York turned around and offered her a smile.
“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Tu Nan said as she walked over to his side.
“Tardiness is a lady’s prerogative,” York said gallantly.
Tu Nan remained noncommittal.
“Mr. York, can you tell me the truth about my sister’s death now?”
“Don’t be in such a hurry.” York turned back to look at the scenery across from the rooftop. “Look at how wonderful the view is from here.”
Tu Nan frowned. “It is very nice, but I’m in no mood to appreciate it right now. I hope you can understand.”
“Of course, I certainly understand you.” York smiled.
“What did they tell you?”
“The hospital said… my sister committed suicide.” Tu Nan raised her voice slightly. “But I know her. It is absolutely impossible that she committed suicide!”
“Indeed, she was such a kind, lovely, and passionate girl,” York said in a nostalgic tone. “Someone like that would certainly not take her own life.”
“So you mean she really was murdered?”
“What do you think?” York asked with a smile.
“I only want to know the truth.” Tu Nan looked him straight in the eye. “Others told me she died falling from this rooftop, and at the time, only you and He Ling were here.”
“You haven’t forgotten about He Ling, have you?”
“Of course I haven’t forgotten her.” York shrugged. “Though I haven’t seen her in a very long time.”
“Is it because of a guilty conscience?” Tu Nan said bluntly. “She and my sister were very close.”
“A guilty conscience?” York began to laugh as if he had just heard the funniest joke in the world.
Tu Nan watched coldly as he doubled over with laughter.
“Actually, it should be that she’s afraid to see me, shouldn’t it?” York finally finished laughing and spoke in a slow, deliberate manner.
