Chapter 78
Chapter 78
Listening to Maria’s nonchalant words, Tu Nan’s heart couldn’t help but grow heavy.
It wasn’t difficult to guess the fate of the civilians who had vanished within the hospital.
She remained silent for a moment, choosing to skip the topic for now.
“Then, why don’t you tell me about your two roommates?” Tu Nan looked at her. “To pass my internship, I must gain their approval.”
Maria frowned with a hint of distress.
“Obviously, both of them are lunatics who are impossible to communicate with.”
Tu Nan was taken aback. If even a roommate living in the same ward said so, it was clear how difficult it would be to obtain stamps from those two.
“As for Miss Lepei, I believe nothing exists in her world except that long hair of hers. And Little Red Riding Hood… she’s always talking to herself.”
“What does she say?” Tu Nan tried to learn as much as possible about her.
“Something about the previous nurses, it seems… I don’t know the specifics because I don’t care,” Maria said coldly.
She truly didn’t seem like the type of person who would pay attention to such things out of curiosity.
It seemed Tu Nan would have to investigate for herself.
Perhaps if she discovered the story behind it, she would be able to communicate with them.
Tu Nan furrowed her brows, lost in thought.
The files the Head Nurse had given her contained only basic information. Logically, the hospital should have more detailed medical records, but she had no idea where they were kept.
“It’s about that time.” Maria stretched lazily, interrupting Tu Nan’s train of thought.
“I should head back to the ward.” She looked at Tu Nan with a smile. “I hope our cooperation will be a pleasant one.”
“Of course.”
Tu Nan believed there would be many more occasions where she would need Maria’s help.
On the way back to the ward with Maria, Tu Nan took a moment to stop by the Logistics Department. Her ID badge had already been made.
Tu Nan took the badge from Dawson and gave it a casual glance.
It didn’t look much different from the ID badges she was familiar with, and there was nothing particularly special about its appearance. However, since the Rules stated it must be kept safe, it definitely had its own significance.
She hung the badge around her neck and thanked Dawson.
“You’re welcome,” Dawson replied with his usual coldness, handing her another nearly identical badge. “This is Daisy’s. Please give it to her for me.”
Tu Nan accepted it readily.
She returned to Ward 403, intending to take the remaining patients downstairs for some fresh air, but the others didn’t seem to have any such intention.
Little Red Riding Hood was obsessed with her unfinished building blocks, and Lepei had finally finished washing her hair, occupying herself by drying it on the balcony.
Maria, having returned to the ward, sat on the sofa holding a book, giving Tu Nan a look that suggested she was unable to help.
Tu Nan had no choice but to go to Ward 404.
“Does anyone want to go out for a stroll?” Tu Nan asked with a smile.
Eric glared at her with fury.
“Except for Mr. Eric,” she added, still smiling.
The Peters buried themselves under their blankets, their refusal quite clear.
“No one could have the heart to refuse a lady’s request.” York walked up to her with a gallant air, his eyes looking deep into hers. “Miss Tu Nan, I believe I can accompany you for a walk in the garden.”
In Tu Nan’s eyes, York was like a gaudy peacock, constantly flaunting a beauty that didn’t actually exist.
Perhaps some would be captivated by his decent looks and hypocritical facade, but clearly, she was not one of them.
She narrowed her eyes at York and, after a moment, gave a soft smile.
“Of course. It is my duty and obligation.”
York clicked his tongue. “Is that all?”
“Of course,” Tu Nan replied, unmoved.
As the two of them stepped out of the ward, York walked by Tu Nan’s side, his gaze suddenly dropping to her chest.
Tu Nan keenly sensed his stare and instinctively angled her body away.
“Mr. York, is there something wrong?” she asked.
York let out a soft chuckle. “You seem a bit stiff around me.”
“A certain distance must be maintained between a nurse and a patient,” Tu Nan said, her expression remaining neutral. “I am simply managing that distance.”
“How heartbreaking. Such a lovely lady, yet she treats me like a pariah.” York’s voice was thick with theatricality, sounding incredibly bizarre to the ear.
Tu Nan didn’t respond, but she noticed he was still staring at her chest.
Her chest… Tu Nan looked down. The only thing there was the ID badge she had just put on, swaying slightly as she moved.
“Are you looking at my ID badge?” She frowned slightly, wondering why York seemed so fixated on it.
“I didn’t see it this morning,” York said with a shrug. “It suddenly appeared, so I was just a bit curious.”
They rounded a corner and headed toward the stairwell.
“That’s because it was only just finished.”
“I see…” York replied softly. For some reason, his pace slowed.
Tu Nan had already reached the edge of the stairs. Seeing him suddenly lag behind, she instinctively stopped and turned back to look at him.
York’s hand was frozen awkwardly in mid-air.
Their eyes met, and the air seemed to go still for a moment.
Was York trying to… push her down?
Tu Nan looked at his hand, which he hadn’t had time to pull back, her thoughts filled with disbelief.
To strike like this-it was far too clumsy.
“Oh my.” York blinked and gave an embarrassed smile. “Sorry about that. I wanted to play a little joke on you, but I didn’t expect to get caught.”
His tone was leisurely, showing no sign of distress at being discovered. “Miss Tu Nan, you’re very alert.”
“If I’m not mistaken, you were trying to push me down the stairs,” Tu Nan said, staring at him coldly. “I can report behavior like this.”
“But aren’t you standing here perfectly fine?” York tilted his head, a Weird light flashing in his eyes as he adopted an innocent posture. “If you slander me like that, I could file a complaint against you too.”
Tu Nan stared at him for a few seconds before forcing a fake smile.
“I was just joking with you as well.”
York covered his mouth and laughed brightly.
“Miss Tu Nan, you really do have a sense of humor.”
Tu Nan sneered inwardly, feeling a sudden impulse to tear the fake mask right off his face.
York might seem like the easiest one to talk to, but in reality, he was likely the most troublesome of all the patients.
“Let’s head downstairs first,” she said calmly, taking a step back to gesture for York to go ahead.
York curled his lip and asked seemingly at random, “Nurse, you won’t push me down, will you?”
She certainly wanted to.
Tu Nan’s lips twitched into a stiff, mirthless grin. “How could I? A nurse’s duty is to protect the patient.”
“I’m just joking with you, hahahahahaha!” York burst into laughter. “Look at your expression, it’s so precious.”
For the first time since entering this Instance, Tu Nan felt a genuine urge to punch someone.
Fortunately, after York finished laughing, he finally turned and walked down the stairs.
Tu Nan watched his retreating back and sighed.
Life isn’t easy; even nurses have to sigh.
