Chapter 118
Chapter 118
Seeing that she refused to open the door, the person outside finally gave up on the idea of entering. Silence returned to the hallway; the Weird seemed to have departed.
However, Tu Nan didn’t dare to be careless. She pressed herself against the door, calculating the time. The security guard should be arriving soon.
Just then, the faint sound of a commotion rose from outside.
There were disorganized footsteps and the muffled, startled cry of the woman’s voice from before.
Was it the security guard?
After a few more minutes, there was another knock on the lounge door.
This time, the voice was the deep male tone Tu Nan had heard over the phone.
“Is anyone in the lounge? The troublemaker has been caught.”
Tu Nan paid close attention to the crack at the bottom of the door. A faint light filtered through, appearing exceptionally bright in the dark room.
She took a deep breath and opened the door.
Her eyes had already adjusted to the darkness, and the sudden contact with light was somewhat jarring. Tu Nan squinted, seeing a man standing before her in a security uniform. The Fairy Tale Hospital logo was embroidered on the uniform, and a name-bearing ID Badge was pinned to his chest.
She breathed a sigh of relief.
“Are you the night shift nurse?” the man asked.
“That’s me,” Tu Nan nodded. “I’m the one who called just now.”
“Let me see your ID Badge,” the security guard said sternly.
Although his identity seemed legitimate, Tu Nan didn’t dare hand her ID Badge directly to him. She pulled the badge out from inside her uniform and held it up.
“Just to be safe, you can look at it like this.”
Fortunately, the guard didn’t mind this small detail. After confirming her ID Badge, he signaled that she could put it away.
Tu Nan tucked the ID Badge back into her uniform. Once she was certain everything was in order, she asked, “Is the person under control? Can I take a look?”
“She’s been restrained.” The guard nodded and pointed behind him.
He had a colleague who was using a baton to pin a woman against the wall.
Tu Nan walked over to inspect the woman.
To her surprise, the woman was wearing a hospital nurse’s uniform.
“Why is she wearing a nurse’s uniform?” Tu Nan asked.
“Obviously, that’s how she sneaked into the hospital,” the guard said expressionlessly. “She doesn’t have an ID Badge. She isn’t an employee of the hospital.”
Tu Nan’s throat felt a bit dry.
“How are you going to handle her?”
“A non-employee sneaking into the hospital late at night must be punished according to the hospital’s Rules.”
The guard reached out to take control of the woman facing the wall.
Tu Nan finally saw her face.
It was a pale, bloated face, clearly belonging to someone who had been dead for a long time.
She forced herself not to look away, observing her closely.
The woman’s expression was numb, and her eyes were like a pool of stagnant water; from the moment Tu Nan saw her, there wasn’t a single flicker of emotion. There was dark bruising under her eyes, and her entire face was etched with exhaustion.
In the deep of the night, Tu Nan broke into a cold sweat.
Why would such a person need to sneak into the hospital?
This kind of face, this kind of expression-she felt as though she had seen it many times before.
Which nurse in this hospital didn’t look like this?
Numb and exhausted.
She suddenly remembered the conversation between the two nurses she had overheard yesterday.
-“Even if you die, you’ll still be a ghost of this hospital.”
“Nurse Tu Nan, we saw a broken Oil Lamp in the hallway just now,” the security guard suddenly asked. “Did you break it?”
Tu Nan snapped back to her senses and forced a smile as she nodded. “It was me. I was on my rounds when she suddenly startled me, and I accidentally broke the Oil Lamp. I’ll go clean it up in a moment.”
The guard nodded. “We’re taking her away. If you need anything else, you can call the security office again.”
“Alright, thank you for your help.”
Tu Nan saw them to the stairwell. Since her Oil Lamp had been smashed, the security guard left one behind for her to use.
She carried the lamp toward the ward and spotted the shattered remains of her own Oil Lamp at the entrance of Ward 403.
She wasn’t sure if it had been broken by accident or on purpose.
The room was dim and devoid of sound. Tu Nan didn’t bother knocking; she simply held up her lamp, opened the door, and walked inside.
“Sister Tu Nan.”
Little Red Riding Hood was sitting on the bed, huddled under the covers with only her large eyes peeking out, watching her expectantly.
Little Red Riding Hood’s parents stood in the corner, looking at her with a sense of restrained anxiety.
Tu Nan walked around to the other side to check on Lepei. Fortunately, she hadn’t woken up and was lying quietly on the bed with her eyes closed.
She carefully drew the curtain between the two beds and beckoned the others over.
The group formed a small circle around Little Red Riding Hood’s bed.
“Start talking,” Tu Nan said in a low voice, looking at them sternly. “What exactly is going on here?”
“I told Mama to break the Oil Lamp outside on purpose,” Little Red Riding Hood said, her head hanging low. “I wanted to help distract them for you.”
“That’s not what I want to know.” Looking at Little Red Riding Hood’s expression, Tu Nan felt a pang of sympathy, but she hardened her heart. “How do you know the hospital’s regulations so well?”
“We really can’t say,” Little Red Riding Hood’s mother sighed. “Someone was kind enough to help us; how could we betray them like that?”
The fact that the guards hadn’t come to take them away meant Tu Nan hadn’t exposed their presence. Their initial wariness toward her had begun to settle into a cautious trust.
Tu Nan sighed.
“Nurse, I’m begging you, please just let us take Little Red Riding Hood away,” her father pleaded in a low voice. “Little Red Riding Hood isn’t going to survive much longer.”
“Not going to survive?” Tu Nan’s eyes widened slightly. “What do you mean by that?”
“They want her to have surgery-to transplant her organs into someone else,” her mother said through tears.
“Is that also what that person told you?”
The answer was self-evident.
Someone capable of knowing such information certainly wasn’t just an ordinary staff member.
Who could it be…?
No wonder they had risked entering the hospital like this. So this was the reason.
Maria had hinted to her long ago that while this hospital appeared to be open to everyone on the surface, it was actually nothing more than a facility serving the Nobility.
When an unsuspecting Commoner entered this hospital, their chances of ever leaving were slim to none.
However…
“I still can’t let you take them,” Tu Nan’s voice sounded somewhat cold. “If she leaves, I’m the one who dies.”
Little Red Riding Hood’s eyes dimmed.
“It’s okay, I understand.” She forced a smile for her parents. “Mama, Papa, you should leave quickly. It’ll be bad if you’re caught. I’m already grateful enough that Sister Tu Nan didn’t turn you in.”
Even now, Little Red Riding Hood was trying her best not to make her parents worry.
Her mother covered her mouth, but a faint sob still escaped.
“In that case, don’t blame us…” her father whispered. “We’ve been pushed to the brink.”
From his posture, it looked like he was prepared to use force.
“Wait,” Tu Nan interrupted him. “I truly cannot let you take them, but I can help you.”
“Help us?” Little Red Riding Hood’s father froze. “How?”
