Chapter 116
Chapter 116
Over ten minutes.
That was exactly how long it would take for security to arrive at their fastest.
These two seemed very familiar with the hospital’s layout, yet they didn’t know the exact locations of the wards. Combined with their lack of ID Badges, the most likely scenario was that they had an inside contact among the hospital staff.
But what was their goal?
The perfume’s effect was about to wear off, so Tu Nan took it out and gave herself another spray.
They quickly found Ward 403.
To prevent patient accidents, none of the ward doors were ever kept under Lock. The two of them cautiously opened the door to Ward 403 and slipped inside.
Tu Nan stood at the doorway, watching them.
The man approached Little Red Riding Hood’s bed and gently patted her shoulder.
Little Red Riding Hood seemed to wake up and tried to scream, but the man quickly covered her mouth.
His back was to Tu Nan, so she could only see him raise his hand slightly. Then, Little Red Riding Hood, who had been struggling violently, became eerily still.
The Woman beside him held the Oil Lamp. Seemingly afraid of waking Lepei in the other bed, she shielded the light with one hand, carefully preventing any glare from reaching her.
The man by the bed reached out and picked up Little Red Riding Hood. To Tu Nan’s surprise, the girl obediently reached out and wrapped her arms around his neck.
What was going on? Tu Nan found it difficult to understand for a moment.
Had Little Red Riding Hood been bewitched by something Weird?
Tu Nan checked the time again; nearly ten minutes had passed. Looking at their posture, it seemed they were about to leave immediately.
If she went to call security now, they would likely be long gone with Little Red Riding Hood by the time anyone arrived.
While Tu Nan hesitated, the man had already carried Little Red Riding Hood out of the room.
Tu Nan hastily ducked behind the door.
The man didn’t notice her, but Little Red Riding Hood, cradled in his arms, spotted her instantly.
Tu Nan was certain of this because Little Red Riding Hood’s eyes locked onto hers immediately, her large eyes instantly filling with panic.
Children’s perceptions are often sharper than adults’, and since this was Tu Nan’s second time using the perfume, she wasn’t entirely surprised that the girl could see her.
Little Red Riding Hood’s gaze was clear; she didn’t look like someone who had been bewitched.
Tu Nan pressed her index finger to her lips, signaling her to stay quiet.
The man carried Little Red Riding Hood while the Woman held the Oil Lamp to light the way. They moved quickly. Having already traversed the route once, they were clearly much more familiar with the path this time.
They soon reached the Nurse’s Station.
Watching Tu Nan following behind them, Little Red Riding Hood bit her lower lip, her expression torn.
She lowered her head and buried it in the man’s shoulder, avoiding Tu Nan’s gaze.
Tu Nan’s brow furrowed deeper and deeper.
Little Red Riding Hood’s behavior clearly indicated she knew these two; otherwise, she would never be this quiet. Even her movements showed a very obvious sense of intimacy.
What was happening? Who were these two?
Should she stop them? The Rules didn’t seem to mention what to do if a patient was abducted.
The man ahead suddenly stopped in his tracks.
Tu Nan stopped as well.
“What’s wrong? Why did you stop?” The Woman looked back at the man in surprise.
“Someone is following us.” The man’s voice was tense as he turned back to look in Tu Nan’s direction.
His gaze didn’t land on anything specific; instead, he searched with a slight sense of bewilderment.
This meant that he hadn’t discovered Tu Nan himself. Rather, someone had told him about her presence.
Little Red Riding Hood.
Little Red Riding Hood kept her head buried tightly against the man’s shoulder, saying nothing.
“What do you mean, someone?” The Woman stepped forward, raising the Oil Lamp toward Tu Nan’s direction. “There’s nothing there.”
“It wasn’t me…” the man muttered in a low voice.
Tu Nan hesitated for a moment before finally making up her mind. She took a step forward and said, “I’m over here.”
The moment she spoke, the effects of the perfume vanished.
The two people were startled by the sudden appearance of a person right in front of them and instinctively scrambled back a few steps.
The man subconsciously tightened his grip on Little Red Riding Hood. “You… what are you doing here!”
“I should be asking you that. What exactly are you trying to do, breaking into the hospital in the middle of the night to kidnap Little Red Riding Hood?”
Observing their reactions, Tu Nan became even more certain of her suspicion.
These two weren’t Weirds at all.
The pair stood there, speechless.
“I’m sorry, Sister Tu Nan,” Little Red Riding Hood suddenly said.
She tugged at the man’s clothes, signaling for him to set her down.
“Forget it, Mom, Dad. You should give up. You won’t be able to get me out of here.”
Tu Nan wasn’t surprised.
Little Red Riding Hood’s reaction had largely confirmed the identity of the two individuals.
“No, we’ve already come this far. We have to try no matter what,” Little Red Riding Hood’s father said through gritted teeth. “She’s just one woman-it’s not like I can’t take her.”
Tu Nan remained silent.
In truth, she could guess why they were risking everything to kidnap Little Red Riding Hood.
Their only daughter was trapped in this hospital. There hadn’t been any major issues when she was first admitted, yet the longer she stayed, the worse her condition became, and there was no telling when she would ever be discharged.
Any responsible parents would have done exactly what they were doing.
However, if she simply let Little Red Riding Hood go, her mission would be a failure.
Having a patient under her care vanish without a trace was a mistake significant enough to strip her of any chance of becoming a permanent employee.
Tu Nan was willing to help others within her capabilities, but she wasn’t a martyr. She couldn’t sacrifice her own life for the sake of others.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “You can’t just take Little Red Riding Hood away.”
“I’m begging you.” Little Red Riding Hood’s mother suddenly rushed forward and grabbed her arm. “Please, try to understand how we feel as parents. Little Red Riding Hood is still so young. Are you really going to just stand by and watch her die in this hospital?”
Tu Nan caught the slip in her words. She grabbed the woman’s hand back and asked sharply, “Die in this hospital? Why do you think that? Did someone tell you something?”
“You headed straight for Little Red Riding Hood’s ward the moment you arrived. Even if she told you which room she was in during a previous visit, how did you know the security guards wouldn’t be able to make it here on the hour?”
Though Tu Nan kept her voice low, her words fell clearly upon their ears, carrying a heavy sense of pressure.
“Do you have an accomplice inside this hospital?”
Could it be one of the nurses?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” Little Red Riding Hood’s mother replied, her voice sounding slightly panicked. “Little Red Riding Hood told us the room number before. As for the timing… that was purely a coincidence.”
“I don’t believe in coincidences,” Tu Nan said grimly. “Time is up. Do I need to call the security guards before you’ll tell the truth?”
“Don’t!” Little Red Riding Hood cried out, her voice bordering on tears. “Sister Tu Nan, please don’t do that. I’ll go back with you.”
If she didn’t get to the bottom of this today, she would never get Little Red Riding Hood’s approval stamp, no matter what else she did.
While Tu Nan was hesitating, the temperature in the surrounding air suddenly plummeted.
