Chapter 106
Chapter 106
As he swallowed, he tried to kill Tu Nan with his eyes.
The ward door was suddenly pushed open from the outside.
Tu Nan was very familiar with these footsteps. She looked up and, as expected, saw the Head Nurse.
She walked in, scanned the scene in the ward, and asked casually, “How is the situation?”
Tu Nan nodded. “Everything is fine. The patient is eating with great appetite.”
She pointedly showed the empty plate in her hand to the Head Nurse.
Eric’s face turned beet red from suppressed rage.
The Head Nurse gave it a cursory glance and suddenly shot her a look, signaling for her to follow her out the door.
Tu Nan understood immediately. She stood up, set down the tray, and followed the Head Nurse out.
“Today is the deadline.”
As soon as they left the ward, the Head Nurse lowered her voice and said, “When do you plan to let Miss Charles see York’s true colors? Time is running out.”
The Head Nurse seemed particularly concerned about this matter.
Tu Nan glanced at her. “Rest assured. Before the day is over, he will certainly pay the price for what he has done.”
The Head Nurse’s eyes darted around as she looked Tu Nan up and down. “I hope so.”
“But for now, I still need you to do me a favor,” Tu Nan continued.
“What is it?”
“Miss Charles and York are inseparable right now. I can’t find an opportunity to speak with her alone. I would like you to help me separate the two of them for a while this afternoon.”
Such a task was not difficult for the Head Nurse. She thought about it for a moment and agreed.
*
Miss Charles’s legs would likely never recover.
That was what all the doctors said.
The Duke and the Duchess were furious, yet Miss Charles herself didn’t seem to care very much.
“Since this is already a settled fact, what is the point of being sad and troubled over it?” she said, comforting her mother.
“That’s right, Madam. I will stay by Emily’s side forever,” York said from the side, gripping Emily’s hand with a firm tone.
Emily looked up to meet his gaze, her cheeks flushing slightly, a trace of a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
Seeing this scene, a flash of anger crossed the Duchess’s eyes.
If it weren’t for her daughter, how could she tolerate this man making such grand speeches in front of her?
Recalling her daughter’s bitter pleas, she couldn’t help but sigh.
She felt she had failed Emily; she truly couldn’t find the heart to refuse her daughter’s request.
The Duchess was extremely worried, but she had no good way to deal with the situation.
There was a sudden knock on the ward door.
After receiving an affirmative answer, a nurse walked in. She bowed respectfully to the Duchess and Emily, then gave a gentle reminder.
“It is now the afternoon relaxation period. Patients can go out for some air and breathe in the fresh air.”
York nodded. “Emily really should get some fresh air. I’ll take her out.”
The Duchess looked concerned.
“Mother, don’t worry. With York and the nurse by my side, nothing will happen to me.”
“Very well then.” The Duchess sighed. “Remember to tell the nurse if you need anything.”
Emily nodded with a smile.
“If anything happens to Emily, I guarantee you will die a very ugly death.” The Duchess looked up at York, her tone stern. “You understand the gravity of this.”
“Of course.” York smiled.
Emily had already promised to take him with her when she left the hospital. At the very least, he would take good care of Emily until then.
York looked at Emily on the hospital bed and gave her a tender smile.
Emily also smiled back at him shyly.
The Duchess sighed, feeling that her daughter was truly beyond saving.
*
York pushed Emily to the Garden. There weren’t many people, and it was relatively quiet.
They arrived at the gazebo where Emily had originally fallen. York crouched down, picked Emily up, and carried her into the gazebo, carefully setting her down.
“How about sitting here?” he asked softly.
“As long as you like it,” Emily said with a smile.
Such an obedient girl, but unfortunately, she lacked any real backbone.
York sighed inwardly.
Once he used Emily to escape this place, he would have to find a way to get rid of her.
A girl like this might be fun to toy with for a while, but she would get grating after a long time.
In fact, if it weren’t for Emily’s high social standing and her ability to get him out of the hospital, he would never have wasted so much time on her.
“What are you thinking about?” a soft voice interrupted his thoughts.
York snapped back to reality and looked at Emily. He skillfully flashed a smile and gazed at her tenderly.
“I was thinking about how happy it would be if we could still sit together and watch the scenery like this when we’re old.”
Emily froze for a moment, and a layer of mist quickly clouded her eyes.
“York, you…” she began, visibly moved.
“Excuse me, Mr. York. The Head Nurse would like you to come to her office.”
A nurse came running over in a hurry, interrupting their conversation.
York frowned slightly. “What is it?”
“The Head Nurse didn’t tell me.”
He felt a surge of irritation and opened his mouth to refuse, but then, reconsidering for some reason, he stood up anyway. He turned to Emily and said, “I’ll be right back.”
Emily sat poised, her gaze soft. “It’s fine. I’ll wait for you here.”
York walked away quickly.
As Emily watched his figure disappear, the smile on her face vanished without a trace.
“Miss Emily, we meet again.”
Emily frowned and looked toward the source of the voice.
A woman dressed as a nurse walked into the gazebo. She was a familiar face.
“It’s you?” Emily swept a glance over her. “Is there something you need?”
Tu Nan looked at her with a smile. Not knowing how much time the Head Nurse could buy her, she decided to get straight to the point.
“Do you really think York is a man worth entrusting your life to?”
Emily’s expression darkened.
“What do you mean by that?”
“I believe that with your intelligence, you certainly understand what I’m saying. It might be a bit impolite to say this, but if I may be blunt, York is a complete scumbag. He doesn’t deserve you at all.”
Emily stared at her for a long while, her eyes cold and devoid of any warmth.
Tu Nan met her gaze without flinching.
“And so what?” Emily finally looked away, staring at the distant scenery as she asked the question indifferently.
“Even so, you still want to be with him?”
Emily let out a cold laugh. She raised her hand, showing the ring York had given her on her slender, pale index finger.
“There is no such thing as ridiculous love in this world. I don’t care whether he loves me or not. Even my own parents don’t love me; how could I be foolish enough to believe a man who claims to love me the very first time we meet?”
Tu Nan was puzzled. “Since you know all that, why do you still act as if you’re deeply in love with him?”
“It’s quite fun, isn’t it?” Emily covered her mouth and giggled. “He thinks he has me right where he wants me, but in reality, every step he takes is exactly what I expected.”
Tu Nan’s gaze fell upon Emily’s legs.
“Even if you have to pay such a heavy price for it?”
“You mean these legs?” Emily also looked down. She swung her legs casually and then, under Tu Nan’s shocked gaze, she stood up.
“Perhaps some people think they’ve seen the whole picture,” she said with a sneer. “But more often than not, what they see is merely what I want them to see.”
“Do you know why?”
“Power and money can accomplish far more than you can imagine.”
