Chapter 41

However, all of that was relatively manageable. What Chu Yue was most worried about was something else.

He hadn’t forgotten the classification of this Instance: [Deity Game]. It would inevitably involve rules related to deities.

And the name of this Instance was [Sigh of the Paper-Cut Goddess].

So far, they hadn’t seen any Paper-Cut Goddess, and they hadn’t even heard the street vendors mention her.

He would have to clear this up when they went out tomorrow.

The night was pitch black, and the daytime clamor had died down.

Before closing the window, Chu Yue took a glance outside. There wasn’t a single light to be seen; the town was like a desolate, isolated city.

Shen Yubi and Guan Doujin had already climbed into bed.

After double-checking the doors and windows, Chu Yue finally lay down.

He stared up at the top of the bed. Ever since hearing that man’s story earlier today, Chu Yue felt uncomfortable no matter how he looked at it. He hadn’t been wrong; the things jumping around on the bedsheets last night were indeed the little figures from the paper-cut.

The more he thought about it, the more he felt that the Little Paper Figures he had seen on the stone tablet yesterday bore a resemblance to one of the figures in that paper-cut.

There was no telling what might happen tonight.

Guan Doujin got out of bed to blow out the candle and then quickly scurried back.

While Chu Yue was still lost in thought, Guan Doujin’s breathing had already become steady.

Chu Yue turned over, feeling a bit envious of how carefree the man was.

Knowing Shen Yubi wasn’t asleep yet, he thought for a moment and asked, “How much of what those vendors said today do you actually believe?”

Shen Yubi paused, realizing the question was directed at him. After a two-second silence, he said, “Do you think they were lying?”

Chu Yue answered with a question of his own: “Can NPCs in an Instance lie?”

Shen Yubi replied, “They can, but it’s extremely rare.”

As he spoke, he turned onto his side. In the darkness, Chu Yue couldn’t see his face clearly, but he could feel the other man looking his way.

“You think those two were lying?”

Chu Yue didn’t speak with absolute certainty. “I’m less than fifty percent sure. When some people lie, they often lay a lot of groundwork to make themselves sound convincing. It’s not necessarily that everything is a lie; perhaps they changed a detail or two, or maybe they’re intentionally hiding something.”

“It’s certainly possible. Looking at their attitude, it seems this paper-cut is recognized by everyone in town as an ominous object. Yet, the owner of the Inn has it pasted brazenly on the top of the bed. It’s impossible for it to have gone unnoticed for so many years. Tomorrow, let’s ask a few more people and then go check Zhou Laoda’s house. Get some sleep for now.”

Chu Yue gave a soft hum of agreement. He closed his eyes, then opened them again.

He just remembered that he still had some items he hadn’t checked.

With that in mind, he opened his System screen.

He currently possessed two Level One Instance clues. One was from the Newbie Gift Pack, and the other was from the settlement of the previous Instance.

Holding onto a bit of hope, he clicked on the two clues, but the result left him somewhat disappointed.

One of the clues was for [Fairy Tales], and the other was for the [Horror Collection]. Neither was for a [Deity Game].

Besides, coincidences weren’t that common. Even if a dropped clue fell under the [Deity Game] category, it wouldn’t necessarily be for this specific Instance.

Thinking this over, he opened the Level One inventory. After reading the detailed instructions for its use, Chu Yue frowned.

No matter how he looked at it, this thing was a bit of a white elephant.

A Level One inventory had a maximum space of one square meter, but it could only hold a single item.

It didn’t matter what the item was, as long as it fit the criteria, it could be stored.

He lost interest after just one look and turned his attention to the only item the System had rated as ‘Gold’.

Starting Skill: Charm.

Just looking at the name of the skill, Chu Yue didn’t have high expectations. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have waited until now to remember it.
He was a grown man; why would he need Charm? Even if he put on a seductive expression, no one would buy it. They’d probably just call him a pervert.

He clicked on the skill’s detailed description.

[Usage Requirement: My dear, please look into my eyes. Can you see the waves surging in my heart?]

[Skill Effect: At this moment, you are infatuated with me, sinking into my beauty and following my every command.]

After reading it from beginning to end, Chu Yue was stunned.

If he had been dismissive of the skill before, he now believed the System’s words-this skill really was quite good.

The name didn’t sound great and the description was a bit weird, but it was practical!

If he wasn’t misunderstanding, this skill was somewhat similar to hypnosis; it was absolutely a life-saving ability.

By looking into the target’s eyes and making eye contact when activating the skill, he could briefly control their actions and issue commands.

In a game where people could die at any moment, even a few seconds was precious! It was a pity it only worked one-on-one.

Closing the System panel, Chu Yue felt conflicted. He wanted to find someone to test it on right now, but in this pitch-black darkness, he probably wouldn’t be able to catch anyone’s eye.

Just as he was wondering whether he should drag Shen Yubi awake, an argument broke out outside.

It wasn’t late into the night yet, so naturally, some Players were still awake.

Guan Doujin’s breathing hitched, and he was wide awake in the next second, rolling out of bed.

He opened the door and peered through the crack.

A dark-faced man stood in the corridor holding a lantern, looking at the person opposite him with an expression of difficulty.

The person facing him was the man who had pushed the woman off the balcony.

“Why?! Why can’t I change rooms! There’s clearly room for one more person in their room!”

Chen Sheng was on the verge of a breakdown!

Last night, the person next to him had been killed silently, which had already terrified him. Then, that incident happened this afternoon.

Initially, he felt that sleeping alone in a room was fine, but as night fell and he lay there by himself, he truly understood the meaning of ‘spine-chilling.’

That woman’s body was gone-whether the Innkeeper had dragged it out or something else, he didn’t know-but the sheets hadn’t been changed. As soon as he lay on the bed, the scent of blood enveloped him.

Whenever he closed his eyes, he saw the scene of that woman exploding in front of him.

He couldn’t take it anymore, so he went looking for someone to bunk with for the night.

There were many empty rooms on the 2nd Floor, but he didn’t want to sleep alone; he could only look for rooms that weren’t full.

But upon hearing his request, the others flatly refused, not even opening their doors for him.

The man naturally knew why. Whether intentional or not, he had killed a Monster during the day.

It was still unknown if that was a Death Condition, but there was a high probability he wouldn’t survive the night.

Thinking that he might die silently in that room tonight just like the woman yesterday, Chen Sheng grew desperate.

What if it wasn’t a Death Condition?

What if he wasn’t the one who died tonight?

He didn’t want to stay in that room anymore, so he had no choice but to go downstairs and drag the Innkeeper up.

However, this man wasn’t particularly reliable. After coming up with him, he only knew how to try and smooth things over.

“Honored guest, there are plenty of rooms on the 2nd Floor. Why must you squeeze into this one? We don’t manage these kinds of matters.”

The Innkeeper was somewhat speechless. Who would let a stranger stay in their room while traveling? He had already said they could choose for themselves. You already picked a room, so why insist on crowding into someone else’s now? It wasn’t like there were no empty rooms left.
