Chapter 6

If I had known Cangyu would die, I wouldn’t have run so fast.

Shortly after, he received orders to suppress the war between the demons and monsters.

I thought Cangyu was invincible.

Who could have known that the demons and monsters had prepared an ambush, launching a pincer attack from both front and back?

When the news of Cangyu’s defeat and his plea for reinforcements arrived, the Ninth Heaven was in the midst of a jubilant banquet. The Konghou in Immortal Siyin’s hands came to a sudden halt, but the Empress of Heaven only lazily raised her eyes.

“Immortal Siyin, continue.”

The assembly of immortals fell silent for a moment before resuming their rowdy drinking and toasting.

It was as if the news of Cangyu’s plea for help had never existed.

I moved to stand up, but Sihun held me down.

“Little Peach Blossom, it would be useless even if you went.”

Sensing my body stiffen, Sihun withdrew his hand and curled his lips into a satisfied smile.

To his surprise, I stood up the next second, taking a long stride directly over the table.

I hiked up my skirt and bolted toward the palace gates. The Celestial Dress was cumbersome, so I simply pulled it up to my thighs. A crowd of Immortal Lords lowered their heads, faces flushing red, not daring to look at me.

“Vulgar,” I heard Choulu snort coldly.

Immortal Siyin couldn’t dodge in time and watched helplessly as the Konghou in his hands fell and shattered into pieces.

The Celestial Maidens carrying Nectar and fresh fruit failed to get out of the way; screams and the sound of fruit crashing to the ground echoed one after another.

I didn’t care about the wind whistling past my ears or the delicate tinkling of the Golden Bell on my foot.

I only remembered what the guard had just said:

“…The War God is at the end of his rope.”

What did he mean, at the end of his rope? He was the invincible War God of the Ninth Heaven. How could he be at the end of his rope?

The Heavenly Gate Guards couldn’t stop me. I chanted an Incantation and flew toward the border between the Ninth Heaven and the Demon Race.

At the Heavenly Realm’s Boundary Stele, a towering demon aura and Demonic Miasma loomed.

The Divine Tree, which provided the spiritual energy for the Ninth Heaven, stood in the distance, lush and unperturbed.

I landed amidst the toxic mist, but a sudden shiver ran down my spine.

It felt as if countless eyes were watching me from the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

Before I could turn around, a demonic creature lurking in the dark launched an attack!

A tentacle as thick as five men standing together, surging with demon power, smashed directly toward where I stood.

I was prepared. A mere tentacle wasn’t enough to harm me in the slightest.

“Are you the demoness who siphoned away Cangyu’s cultivation?”

“Well done! Hehehe!”

“How does it feel to engage in Dual Cultivation with the War God?”

“I’m so jealous… to think you actually climbed your way into the Ninth Heaven.”

Whispers hissed from behind the purple mist. As we clashed, the toxic fog thinned slightly, and I finally saw what was attacking me.

It was a monster as large as a palace-a Demonic Thought.

I had only heard Elder Niangui speak of Demonic Thoughts before. They could only be summoned when tens of thousands of demons and monsters sacrificed their Primordial Spirits and their resolve to never enter Reincarnation, swearing to fight an enemy to the death.

Only a hatred that pierces the bone can turn a thought into a demon.

The Demonic Thought before me had grown six tentacles. Its body was covered in purplish-black spots like birthmarks, and tens of thousands of eyes blinked upon it, filled with poisonous resentment. It made me shudder.

The demons and monsters truly loathed the Ninth Heaven.

I looked up past the monster and saw a lonely, dark figure. The Demon-Hunting Sword in his hand was trembling slightly, its golden light flickering as if he were exhausted from the struggle.

While he was focused on dealing with the monster in front of him, a tentacle from behind aimed straight for his heart.

“Watch out!”

I cried out. With a wave of my hand, countless peach blossom petals swirled into a crimson Gale Wind, neatly severing that tentacle.

Only then did Cangyu look up. When he saw that the reinforcements he had pleaded for were me, he froze.
“How is it you?”

Heh. If not me, were you expecting your precious Choulu to come and save you?

“Who did you want it to be?”

Stunned by my retort, he actually fell silent and didn’t argue back.

I let out a cold snort. Though I was annoyed, I stood by his side, not daring to be careless.

The tentacles on the ground twitched as they melted into a pool of purplish-black pus, but another tentacle immediately sprouted from the Demonic Thought’s body.

“This…” I was stunned.

“Hide behind me.”

Cangyu gripped Leyao tightly. His silhouette was tall and imposing, his cloak snapping fiercely in the wind.

He seemed habitually inclined to stand at the front, shielding the weak and the Ninth Heaven behind him.

“You can hide behind me too!”

Ignoring the surprise in his eyes, I pushed off the ground and took flight. The soft petals floating in my palm instantly became as sharp as blades. Imbued with demon power, they struck at the Demonic Thought’s eyes like a torrential rain.

“Traitor!” Thousands of voices echoed through the air. “West of Weak Water! Traitor to the Monster Race!”

I didn’t care about their insults toward the West of Weak Water; I had long since grown used to it.

The West of Weak Water was a faction looked down upon by the rest of the Monster Race. For thousands of years, we only knew how to protect ourselves. Whenever the other monsters plotted rebellions or planned attacks on the Ninth Heaven, the West of Weak Water was never included.

When Elder Niangui was around, she managed the West of Weak Water. Though she was an Elder, she was more like an older sister. Although she was a Spring-Autumn Tree for whom eight thousand years was a single spring and another eight thousand years an autumn, she didn’t look much older than me. Her wisteria-colored hair reached her ankles, and her eyes were a vibrant emerald green.

She rarely got angry and always wore a warm smile, like a gentle and elegant older sister. The assembly of demons in the West of Weak Water all respected her.

Whenever other monsters questioned the West of Weak Water, Sister Niangui would always maintain that understanding, gentle smile and say:

“Piss off. If you want to die, don’t drag the West of Weak Water down with you.”

Thanks to Sister Niangui, the assembly of demons in the West of Weak Water-myself included-were all rather thick-skinned.

The other monsters couldn’t beat Niangui in a fight, and they couldn’t goad the West of Weak Water into being their vanguard.

It wasn’t until Sister Niangui perished in a Heavenly Tribulation that the West of Weak Water…

Just as I was lost in thought, a wisp of toxic mist coiled up around my ankle.

“Don’t get distracted!”

Cangyu swung his sword and severed the mist near my feet, but he froze when he saw the Golden Bell engraved with the name “Sihun” on my ankle.

This man was ridiculous. He told others not to get distracted, yet here he was, spacing out himself.

We fought for a long time, but the Demonic Thought only grew more ferocious as the battle progressed, like an immortal plague.

Realizing I was a Half-Deity Half-Monster, the Demonic Thought seemed eager to try me, staring at me with greed-did it want to devour me?

As the thought crossed my mind, those tens of thousands of eyes locked onto me.

“Drag her down to die with us!”

“Traitor! Traitor to the Monster Race!”

“If the little thing Niangui cared about most dies, can the West of Weak Water still stand idly by?”

I wasn’t afraid, but as they clamored and shrieked, their wails as fellow monsters made my heart uneasy.

Cangyu held Leyao, deathly determined to guard the Ninth Heaven Boundary Stele behind him… and me.

He didn’t look at me, his voice low and heavy. “Leave.”

“I won’t-”

Before I could finish, he shoved me away with great force.

What was he doing?

I watched blankly as his form seemed to expand, the golden light radiating from his body intensifying.

As if confirming a terrifying suspicion of mine, he raised the giant sword Leyao and charged toward the Demonic Thought.

The light emanating from Cangyu’s chest was blinding, filling me with dread-was he planning to take the Demonic Thought down with him at the cost of his own life?

No!
