chapter 19
“Forget it, think it over.”
Han Xue coldly hung up the phone.
Chen Shu heard the “beep beep” and was momentarily stunned.
Are women always this fickle?
Just now Han Xue was acting like a sycophant, and in the blink of an eye she hit him over the head with a stick.
However, this call did serve as a reminder for Chen Shu.
If he really wanted to seize the future “Chen Shu,” there were indeed many factors that needed to be proven.
But if… he had the identity of the Public Security, everything would be much simpler than as a doctor.
Moreover, it could help him avoid some troublesome matters.
Having made up his mind, Chen Shu sent Han Xue a text message.
“I am willing to join the Special Case Group.”
…
Public Security Bureau
After Han Xue saw the message, she raised her eyebrows and a faint smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.
She put away her phone, then picked up the documents on the desk and began to flip through them.
“Chen Shu… are you another ‘Chen Shu’ or the current ‘Chen Shu’?”
“Or am I just overthinking it?”
Han Xue murmured softly.
“Knock knock!”
There was a knock at the door, and Han Xue immediately put the documents back on the desk.
“Come in.”
The door was pushed open, and a Police Officer walked in from outside.
“Captain! The School surveillance has been restored. I made a copy and brought it.”
After speaking, the Police Officer plugged the USB drive into the computer and transferred the contents to the screen in front of Han Xue.
Han Xue lowered her head and scanned the footage, her brows gradually furrowing.
2022, May 25th.
At 8:20 p.m., Liu Hai and several classmates walked out from the School gate, then took a taxi and left after getting in.
May 26th.
Around 2 a.m., Liu Hai and his classmates walked back into the School from the gate. It looked like they had been drinking; Liu Hai was relatively sober.
The others were staggering as they walked.
Then the rest headed back to the Dormitory, but Liu Hai, holding his phone and typing, walked toward the Back Mountain.
After he left, the door of the Security Room was pushed open, and a security guard walked out.
The security guard followed closely behind toward the Back Mountain.
Meanwhile, a woman in a white dress with a high ponytail walked from the girls’ Dormitory toward the School restroom.
Ten minutes later, another woman who looked exactly like the one in the previous footage also walked toward the area above the School restroom, which was the Back Mountain.
Then the surveillance switched to the Back Mountain.
Liu Hai walked deep into the woods of the Back Mountain, where it was pitch black and the surveillance could no longer follow.
A dozen minutes later, Liu Hai appeared again in the footage, looking somewhat angry, then quickly ran toward the upper left of the Back Mountain.
At this point, the Police Officer explained to Han Xue: “Captain, the upper left of the Back Mountain is the Principal’s Office.”
“According to Liu Hai’s earlier statement, he said his phone was out of battery and shut off while he was still groggy, so he wanted to go to his dad’s office to charge it. Unexpectedly, he fell asleep in his dad’s office.”
“Mm.”
Han Xue responded blandly, her face calm.
She stared at Liu Hai on the screen, her eyes narrowed, seemingly deep in thought.
Han Xue asked the Police Officer to keep playing the footage until a girl in a white dress appeared.
She stood quietly by the path on the Back Mountain, waiting for something.
After a few minutes, she walked into the woods of the Back Mountain and then disappeared from the camera.
Then the security guard appeared again on the screen, and Liu Hai was about to come down from the upper left Principal’s Office. Just as he saw the security guard, he seemed afraid and immediately turned to run in the opposite direction.
The Police Officer explained again, “After Liu Hai returned here, he slept until around 5 a.m. He didn’t even check the surveillance footage and just deleted it directly.”
Han Xue nodded and continued watching the surveillance.
On the screen, the security guard glanced at Liu Hai, stood there thinking for a moment, and then walked into the woods of the Back Mountain.
Soon after, a girl in a white dress appeared. She looked toward the woods on the Back Mountain, searching for something, and followed into the woods.
An hour later.
The security guard walked out from the woods. Han Xue zoomed in on the surveillance footage for a closer look and finally noticed something unusual.
The security guard’s hands were covered in gray soil.
This was clearly not just dirt from the woods.
Han Xue’s eyes suddenly lit up.
It must be that his hands were covered in blood, and he used the dust from the soil to cover up the bloodstains!
Ten minutes later, a girl in a white dress walked out of the frame. Her dress was no longer white; it was stained with red filth.
The girl’s face was deathly pale, her eyes vacant and dazed. She staggered out of the woods, her legs gave way, and she collapsed to the ground.
But a strange smile appeared on her face. Then she slowly raised her head to look at the sky, her gaze unfocused, lips slightly parted, as if muttering to herself.
Han Xue saw the girl suddenly burst into manic laughter, a look of confusion flashing across her face.
She instructed the Police Officer, “Are there Zhang Lili’s fingerprints on the victim’s body at the crime scene?”
The Police Officer gave Han Xue a suspicious look.
“Captain Han, isn’t that normal?”
“They lived together all the time, and they’re twin sisters. It’s normal for them to have some physical play and scuffles, isn’t it?”
Han Xue frowned at his words.
“Precisely because they usually play together and have physical contact, it’s even stranger!”
“…”
“You can leave now. I need to study this further.”
The Police Officer nodded and left.
Han Xue remained in the room, watching the girl in the surveillance footage.
“Could it be…”
Her pupils contracted sharply.
Could Zhang Lili be the murderer?
No, no, Han Xue suddenly thought of the most impossible possibility.
That is, the murderer “Chen Shu” helped Zhang Lili kill her sister Zhang Li!
Then had her pretend to be her sister the next day, and her greatest advantage was that she and her sister shared the same DNA!
If she didn’t do this, she would be the murderer!
But her psychological endurance was too weak.
“Chen Shu” only needed to threaten and intimidate her a little, and she completely broke down mentally.
Thinking of this possibility, Han Xue felt a chill run down her spine.
But even if she really was one of the murderers, so what?
She’s already gone mad!
And there’s absolutely no evidence pointing to Zhang Lili, nor did anyone see her actually commit the murder!
After figuring out these questions, Han Xue broke out in a cold sweat, beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
She forced herself to calm down.
She told herself that it was just speculation, and there was no evidence to prove this inference was correct.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the office door.
After Han Xue called out “Come in,” Lu Fan walked in from outside.
He walked over to Han Xue and asked, “Xiao Xue, what’s wrong? You look so pale. Have you been staying up too late these days?”
Hearing Lu Fan’s words, Han Xue suddenly realized that she did look terrible.
She quickly wiped the cold sweat from her forehead and said, “It’s nothing, I just didn’t pay attention before going to bed last night.”
“Oh, I see.”
Lu Fan didn’t think much of it and said, “By the way, we’re already investigating the whereabouts of the murderer ‘Chen Shu’ who disguised himself as a security guard.”
