Chapter 78
Chapter 78
Carrying the urn containing Du Yuwei’s child, we prepared to head back to the cemetery’s main entrance. Once we got out, we would pick up Li Xiumei’s ashes and leave this place for good.
Along the way, we saw many shadows.
These shadows were all human-shaped-some tall, some short, some stout, some thin.
They appeared near the tombstones, looking like a crowd gathered to watch a spectacle.
I had heard Old Zhao Seven mention before that humans possess Three Souls. One of them, the Human Soul, is also known as the Corpse-Guarding Soul, which often stays behind to watch over its own grave.
I figured these shadows were those Corpse-Guarding Souls.
Presumably, when their relatives came to pay their respects, they were aware of it.
“Why didn’t we see any of this when we were coming in…” Song Xiaotian kept his eyes closed almost the entire time.
I thought I was scared enough of these things, but I hadn’t expected this former police officer to be even more terrified than I was.
I said, “It’s probably because we’re carrying this urn. Its yin energy is too heavy, and it’s masking our yang energy.”
They say a human fears a ghost by thirty percent, but a ghost fears a human by seventy.
What ghosts fear about humans is likely their yang energy.
With our yang energy suppressed, these Corpse-Guarding Souls naturally weren’t afraid of us.
However, they showed no intention of harming us either.
Under normal circumstances, a Ghost won’t harm people unless there are special conditions-such as during the Ghost Festival, or if a person provokes them first through offensive actions or words toward the spirits.
Since we hadn’t offended them, we remained unharmed.
Still, seeing those dense clusters of shadows made my heart race. Fortunately, we reached the main gate without any incidents.
From a distance, we could see the security guard still lying outside.
We planned to help him into the security room to lie down before making our final exit.
But before we could get close to him, a sudden, strange gust of wind blew directly into our faces, stinging our eyes.
This wind seemed conscious; as long as we moved forward, it kept blowing, but the moment we stepped back, it stopped.
For a moment, all three of us felt something was off, as if some ‘thing’ was preventing us from leaving.
“Who is it?”
“Could it be the thing in your backpack…”
Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan both looked at me.
I said that shouldn’t be the case. We were currently taking it to find its mother so they could be reunited; it should understand our intentions and wouldn’t go out of its way to make things difficult for us.
Just then, a mass of dark shadow suddenly emerged from the ground.
The shadow looked like spilled ink, gradually forming a human shape. Moreover, that silhouette had long hair.
It was Li Xiumei!
Was Li Xiumei causing this trouble?
I froze for a few seconds before a sudden realization hit me. I quickly grabbed Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan and ran back.
“Quick, find a place to hide! Li Xiumei is warning us!”
We ran back and hid in a spot far from the main gate.
“What’s wrong? What is Li Xiumei warning us about?”
“Are we not leaving?”
Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan didn’t seem to have noticed the shadow just now.
“That strange wind earlier was Li Xiumei trying to warn us.”
My heart hammered in my chest. “Someone might be heading toward the cemetery. If we go out now, we’ll run right into them.”
Meng Yifan covered his mouth. “Who would come here in the middle of the night? Could it be Du Ruhai…”
I didn’t know who was coming, but soon enough, cars appeared outside the cemetery gates.
They were all vehicles in the four to five hundred thousand yuan range, uniform black. There were five in total, and they all came to a halt right outside the cemetery.
Before long, a crowd of people piled out of the cars-about twenty of them, all dressed in black suits.
I recognized one of them immediately. He was Du Ruhai’s bodyguard. When we had gone to the Weihai Group the other day, this same man had blocked our path upstairs.
“Holy crap, it really is Du Ruhai’s people!”
“The surveillance is already down, how did Du Ruhai find out?”
I told them it was precisely because the cameras were down. The feed here was likely being transmitted in real-time; once they realized there was a problem with the signal, they would obviously send people over immediately.
“Stop gawking and run! What are you waiting for?”
Exhausted and exasperated, Song Xiaotian grabbed Meng Yifan and me and started running.
Those bodyguards had already seen the unconscious security guard. They definitely knew something was wrong and would be searching the grounds for us any second.
I thought to myself, the main gate is the only way in or out of this cemetery. Where are we supposed to run?
The perimeter walls were so high that climbing over them seemed impossible.
Still, we ran back toward the Phoenix Grave, which was near the edge of the cemetery.
Song Xiaotian told us to climb out right there.
I took one look and realized it was a tall order. While the fence was climbable, you could only get about halfway up before there was nothing left to grip. There was no way to reach the top.
“Just get up there first. If we don’t move now, we’re going to get caught red-handed,”
Song Xiaotian urged us. “I’ll climb up first, then you guys can step on my shoulders to get over.”
Meng Yifan asked, “What about you? Once we’re out, who are you going to step on?”
“I’ll step on thin air, damn it! I can get out on my own!”
By now, I could hear a heavy barrage of footsteps. The bodyguards were already rushing inside.
I told Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan to start climbing while I took care of something.
They didn’t waste any more time and immediately ran to the fence.
I pulled out the last of the joss paper from my backpack and dumped it all in front of the Motorcycle Influencer’s headstone.
“Big sister, I’m burning all of this for you.”
“Please, do me a favor and stall those guys coming in. I’ll bring Song Xiaotian back later and let you feel his ass. Thanks!”
After burning the paper, I hurried over to the others.
Meng Yifan had already used Song Xiaotian’s shoulders to vault over. I quickly scrambled up the fence and prepared to step on Song Xiaotian’s shoulders to make my exit.
I noticed Song Xiaotian was shaking so hard I could barely keep my grip.
“Brother, step on my shoulders, not my head!”
“Oh, sorry.”
I looked down and realized I was indeed standing on his head. No wonder he was shaking.
By the time I reached the top of the fence, I looked back and saw the bodyguards had already charged in. They were less than fifty meters away.
Strangely, however, they were all marching in place. Some were even running at full tilt but staying in the exact same spot, unable to advance.
Song Xiaotian saw it too and was startled. “What are they doing? Have they lost their minds?”
“It’s probably a Ghost Wall…” I said.
Unsurprisingly, this had to be the work of the Motorcycle Influencer.
That ghost was actually quite principled; she took the money and did the job, successfully stalling them for us.
I didn’t stick around to watch any longer and flipped over the cemetery wall.
A moment later, Song Xiaotian climbed over as well.
Without stopping to catch our breath, we circled back to the spot where we had hidden Li Xiumei’s funerary urn.
Once we retrieved it, we immediately sprinted down the mountain.
