Chapter 76
Chapter 76
The security guard was already lying on the ground, unconscious.
We quickly ran toward the main gate, our feelings suddenly becoming a bit complicated. The main issue was that we didn’t know if the guard was just knocked out or actually dead. If he was dead, our sins would be grave indeed.
Fortunately, when we reached his side, we found that he was only unconscious, not dead.
Not daring to waste any more time, we rushed into the security room and began checking the surveillance monitors. I had Meng Yifan wave his arms under the camera at the main gate to see if it could capture him.
We soon had our confirmation: the surveillance system had failed. The footage was frozen, just like when Du Yuwei had come to our shop.
Old Zhao Seven had told us before that Ghosts are energy fields, and since electricity also has a magnetic field, Ghosts can affect all electrical appliances.
Now that Li Xiumei had dealt with both the guard and the cameras, we shouldered our backpacks and headed toward the location of the Phoenix Grave.
There were only two Phoenix Graves in the entire cemetery. When we visited the funeral company yesterday, the salesperson had pointed out the locations of both, including the one that had already been sold. I had memorized the route then.
On our way to the Phoenix Grave, we saw many yellow pieces of Talisman Paper. These talismans were scattered all over the ground, and their edges were blackened as if they had been scorched by fire.
“Why are these things here?”
“Could this cemetery be haunted…”
We stopped, and Song Xiaotian’s expression changed as he picked up a piece of Talisman Paper from the ground.
Meng Yifan said, “Even if the cemetery is haunted, those ghosts would be the Ghosts from the graves. Talisman Paper is used to suppress Ghosts. If visiting family members saw these, it wouldn’t look good.”
I looked up and noticed that wherever there were talismans, there were trees. It seemed these talismans had fallen from the trees. The cemetery management certainly wouldn’t let these talismans be seen everywhere; it would be hard to explain to families coming to pay their respects. Since families always visit during the day, these talismans must have fallen after dark. Moreover, the blackened edges meant these were ‘burst talismans’-they had already lost their power.
“I know why Du Yuwei didn’t dare to come,”
I speculated, “It’s because of these talismans. She didn’t dare enter, but Li Xiumei just did. Li Xiumei has been dead for fifteen years and carries a heavy grudge; she’s no ordinary Ghost. These talismans couldn’t suppress her, so they burst.”
Song Xiaotian swallowed hard. “I’ve only ever heard of talismans countering ghosts. This is the first time I’ve heard of a ghost countering talismans. Just how powerful is this lady…”
I told them to ignore that for now; getting down to business was more important.
Soon, we found the Phoenix Grave-the burial site of Du Yuwei’s child. All the plots in this cemetery were for the wealthy, and the graves we had passed were built with great elegance. However, compared to this Phoenix Grave, they were a step down in class.
“Building such a nice place just to bury an infant… being rich must be nice.”
“If I didn’t know better, I’d think a prince was buried here.”
After our lamentations, it was time to open the grave and dig. It was our first time doing something like this, and we lacked experience, not knowing where to strike with our shovels.
In the end, we had to resort to brute force, digging from the side of the tomb to see if we could tunnel through to the bottom and pull out the vessel containing the ashes.
It was a massive undertaking. Without machinery, we had to rely on manual labor and shovels. After digging for a long time, Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan were exhausted and sat down to rest.
I wanted to rest too, but I was afraid we wouldn’t have enough time. As soon as dawn broke, Li Xiumei would leave, the guard would wake up, and the surveillance would return to normal.
As I was digging away by myself, I suddenly felt someone grope my backside.
Thinking it was Song Xiaotian or Meng Yifan playing a prank on me, I spun around and glared at them. “What’s wrong with you guys!”
Song Xiaotian looked at me with a face full of confusion. “Why are you cursing at us?”
I asked them which one of them had just touched my butt.
Song Xiaotian replied irritably, “Are you mental? Who would want to touch your ass?”
Meng Yifan added, “You’re not some hot babe. You’re digging so hard you’re starting to hallucinate.”
I brushed it off and went back to digging.
But soon after, I felt another touch on my backside. This time, it wasn’t just a touch; someone actually gave my butt a firm squeeze.
I turned pale with fright and quickly looked at them. “You perverts! You’re really going to play jokes on me in a place like this?”
This time, both of them froze. Their expressions turned fearful. “We swear, we really didn’t touch you…”
Seeing how exhausted they were-looking like they didn’t even want to move-I figured they probably weren’t bored enough to pull a stunt like that.
A sudden wave of dread washed over me, and I felt my stomach drop.
If it wasn’t them, then it had to be a ghost.
Was Li Xiumei touching me?
Was she feeling lonely?
I didn’t dare ask the empty air. If it wasn’t her and I wrongly accused her, who knew what she might do to me.
I quickly urged the other two, “Stop resting. This place is haunted. Dig faster, let’s get the stuff out and get out of here.”
The hole was getting deeper, and we were preparing to dig horizontally toward the grave.
After digging for a while longer, Song Xiaotian suddenly let out a cry.
He stared at Meng Yifan and me with a look of pure terror. “Who just touched my butt…”
Meng Yifan and I shook our heads, indicating it wasn’t us.
“Crap, who the hell is it? This is so depraved!” Song Xiaotian was terrified.
Meng Yifan seemed a bit annoyed. “How come nobody’s touching mine? Is it because my cheeks are too thick…”
I thought to myself how bizarre this was. If there really was a ghost, this ghost wasn’t doing anything else except specifically groping people’s backsides.
What kind of ghost had such peculiar tastes?
“You two keep digging, I’m going to check the surroundings.”
With that, I walked toward a few tombstones about ten meters away.
I looked over each of them and found only one belonged to a woman.
I actually recognized the woman; she was a local Motorcycle Influencer who had over four hundred thousand followers before she passed.
She was a very beautiful woman, only in her early twenties, younger than me.
Just two months ago, she had been leaning into a turn on the highway when she lost control. Both she and her bike flipped over the guardrail, and she died on the spot.
I had heard before that this influencer had a very messy private life, with quite a few scandals leaked in the past.
I quickly pulled some joss paper from my backpack, burning it while bowing to her grave.
“Big sister, please stop scaring us. We’re just here on serious business.”
“A mother asked us to come and collect her child. We aren’t digging up your grave, so please show some mercy and stop touching us.”
“If you’re really feeling lonely, I’ll come back and burn a couple of paper men for you later.”
After finishing my bows, I went back to join Song Xiaotian and the other in digging.
This time, things were finally peaceful; no one touched our backsides again.
After about another hour of digging, we finally hit something. It was a funerary urn.
Meng Yifan was excitedly reaching out to pull it out, but I stopped him immediately.
Because the surface of this urn was completely covered in yellow talismans.
I broke into a cold sweat just looking at it.
