Chapter 2
Chapter 2
I spent ten years molding Si Han into the perfect wife, but I don’t love her anymore.
The person I love is Qian Qingqing.
She is a new intern at our company, and as the Vice President in charge of her department, I am her supervisor. She adores me.
Qian Qingqing is an incredibly cute girl. In private, she calls me “Brother” and refers to herself as a “little scatterbrain.”
She truly is a bit of a scatterbrain; she’s always making mistakes at work, and even the simplest tasks are enough to send her into a flustered panic.
With just a few casual pointers from me, her large eyes fill with stars as she exclaims sweetly, “Brother, you’re amazing!”
It gives me a profound sense of accomplishment.
After all, my wife, Si Han, hasn’t made me feel needed like that in a very long time.
She can handle everything on her own.
When we were renovating, she bargained with the contractors herself and even bought and assembled the cabinets with her own two hands.
When the elevator broke down, she carried the stroller and our child up over ten flights of stairs. I could faintly see the muscle definition in the arms she used to hold the child-they were no longer the soft, pale arms they once were.
When I come home, she talks to me about recent real estate price trends, analyzing how many years it will take for us to move into a better school district and how to maximize our child’s future educational resources.
After finishing her methodical analysis, she’ll push up her glasses and ask for my thoughts.
I agree with her out of habit, telling her that everything she says makes sense.
But in my heart, I’m thinking-
How dull.
Si Han used to be a romantic young girl with long, wavy hair who never wore the same dress twice on our weekly dates.
Now, she’s cut her hair short after having the baby. Her complexion is a bit sallow, and she never wears makeup.
Wearing those frame glasses, she looks like a school homeroom teacher or a neighborhood committee leader-anything but a charming woman.
I’ll talk to her about the latest movies or the books I’m reading with great enthusiasm, but when I’m done, she’ll only say, “The Baby is almost out of supplementary food. Remember to use your company vouchers to get two more cases.”
It leaves me feeling completely cold.
And so, I tell myself that having an affair isn’t my fault; she has plenty of her own problems.
Just then, Qian Qingqing sends me a message on WeChat.
[Brother Cheng Nian, a new trendy Thai restaurant just opened across from the office. I really want to go check it out, but I can’t find anyone to go with me.]
She attaches a whimpering emoji.
Without a moment’s hesitation, I reply immediately:
[Who says you have no one to go with? Don’t you have me?]
