Chapter 5
Chapter 5
In truth, I had asked Shen Zhao that very same question once.
He was a Young General, the man of every noble lady’s dreams, yet for some reason, he had fallen for me.
At the time, I was still at the Wei Manor, nothing more than an ordinary maidservant.
Shen Zhao and I were hardly a match. Because of that, I had always treated him coldly and refused his advances.
Shen Zhao had spent eighteen years living a charmed, successful life. He never expected to meet defeat at my hands, yet he seemed to enjoy the challenge.
One day, the hibiscus along the walls of the Wei Manor bloomed overnight in clusters of soft pink.
The Young General stood on the other side of the wall and answered me:
“The world is full of rules and restrictions, but you are so wonderful. I love you because I love you; what does being a ‘match’ have to do with anything? My mother mocks me, asking how I can be chasing a young lady when I can’t even get a word in with her.”
“I have only one thing to say. Ah Fu, I intend to marry you and bring you home. Nothing can stand in my way.”
Shen Zhao was honest and open, never once hiding his affection.
Later, when chaos erupted in the Capital City, Shen Zhao died in the turmoil while protecting the Crown Prince.
His confidant came to return our marriage certificate.
The man said, “The General has passed. You are free to marry as you wish, Miss.”
Shen Zhao had been fearless, a man who once lived life to the fullest in the Capital City.
He never expected to be stopped by life and death.
In the end, he was never able to marry me.
