Chapter 7
Gu Yisheng listened to my story seriously for the first time, without interrupting me once.
After I finished, he was silent for a very, very long time.
“I need to think about this first, An Ge. This is beyond my field of knowledge. I need to think.”
So, he began to look up information and consult various people-not only in the scientific community, but also from Buddhism, Taoism…
We agreed that he would send me any progress as soon as he made it, and the next day, after I convinced him again in the same way, I would give him feedback on my progress, and he would continue his research based on that.
Because I had to wait for his research feedback every day, I gave up the twelve o’clock attempt to jump off the building.
So, the ways of dying became varied again.
I was still afraid and anxious, sometimes tormented by unknown deaths to the point of wanting to jump directly.
But because I had hope, I gritted my teeth and held on.
During this time, Lan Xiao would come to see me from time to time.
Shrouded in death, I had no mood to pretend anymore.
I stopped working, my usual energetic state was gone, and I didn’t even feel like talking.
Every day, I devoted myself to avoiding known threats of death, trying to prolong my life-long enough to receive Yisheng’s call.
That afternoon, Lan Xiao suddenly walked up to me.
“Why didn’t you come to my office when I called you?”
I replied casually, “I’m not available today. If there’s anything, let’s talk tomorrow.”
As soon as I finished speaking, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the general manager’s office in front of everyone.
He poured me a glass of juice and looked at me with a deep gaze.
“An Ge, has something happened to you?”
I tugged at the corner of my mouth and said indifferently, “It’s nothing, I’m just exhausted.”
Since everything would restart, I didn’t care at all.
But he suddenly fell silent, and after a long while, he spoke slowly.
“An Ge, do you remember how energetic you were every day when you were my assistant? Just seeing you made people happy. If your husband treats you badly, or if you need help, you can come to me.”
I frowned and reached out to touch his forehead.
“Your face is a bit red. Are you running a fever?”
This gesture was a bit intimate-something I would never normally do.
But, who cares!
He froze a little.
He pressed his lips together, as if making up his mind to say something, when my phone rang in my pocket.
I quickly took it out and stepped aside to answer.
Gu Yisheng’s slightly excited voice came through: “An Ge, I’ve found a way to break the cycle!”
Just as he finished speaking, the huge chandelier fell with a bang.
It landed right on top of me.
As I closed my eyes, I saw Lan Xiao rushing over, his face full of panic.
