Chapter 4
The next day, during a brief phone call, I asked this question.
He replied, “The people in the story die differently each time. It seems like they enter different parallel universes.”
“Why do they die every time?”
“Maybe because the ending is destined.”
“Then why do they keep being reborn in a loop?”
He paused for a moment. “Modern science has only developed for about three hundred years. There are many phenomena in the world that can’t be explained yet.”
Then he laughed and asked, “Do you really need such rigorous theoretical support to write an online novel? If science can’t explain it, you can look to metaphysics.”
I was surprised. “You’re a physics professor, and you believe in that?”
“I do. Why not?”
“There are actually many things in common between religion and science. Didn’t a famous physicist once say, when scientists finally climb to the top of the mountain after all their efforts, they find that theologians have been waiting there for thousands of years?”
Someone nearby called out, “It’s time to go in,” and he hurriedly hung up the phone.
I sat at my desk for a long time, a question lingering in my mind: Why must I die?
Although I’m an orphan, I’ve never wallowed in self-pity. I’m grateful for the state’s support, I was diligent and eager to learn from a young age, always positive and kind to others.
With a willingness to work hard and a flexible mind, I earned my first pot of gold by working part-time in college, and then spotted a few stocks at the right time, multiplying my assets several times over.
After graduation, I joined this big company, starting from the bottom, working overtime, and my annual bonuses were always among the top.
Many people say I’m lucky, but only I know that I simply used the time others spent having fun and dating to work and make money.
Having no family or relatives since I was a child, money became my greatest source of security.
I do love money, but I’ve never harmed others for my own gain or taken petty advantages.
Every cent I earned was honest and aboveboard.
By the time I met Yisheng, I was already a bona fide little rich woman.
He, too, had come from poverty, a humble student who completely understood and empathized with me.
These past few years, we’ve supported each other, complemented each other’s strengths, and finally carved out our own places in the world.
I’m a well-paid project director, and he became a respectable university professor.
Two years ago, we held our wedding in his hometown, promising to stay together for life.
A wonderful life had just begun, and I hadn’t even had time to enjoy it.
Why must I die?!
Just as I was drowning in overwhelming frustration and resentment, a slender, fair finger appeared before my eyes.
The knuckle bent slightly, tapping on my desk.
“An Ge, are you sleepwalking in broad daylight?”
I looked up.
Lan Xiao, my boss, stood with his arms crossed, his tall figure leaning against the edge of my desk, tilting his head as he stared at me.
I sighed, walked to the window, opened it, and jumped out.
In the moment of falling, I saw Lan Xiao’s distorted face again-bewildered, shocked, terrified.
