Chapter 2
A chill radiating from my chest instantly swept through my entire body. My fingertips trembled as I shoved him away.
Song Yuan blankly withdrew his gaze and focused on me.
Seeing my own disheveled reflection in his pupils, I lowered my head. “Get out. I need to change.”
A flicker of something complex crossed his face, but he said nothing and left in silence.
After getting ready, I walked out of the bedroom just in time to see Song Yuan at the door. He held an umbrella in one hand and was repeatedly dialing a number on his phone with the other.
As the automated voice informed him time and again that the recipient’s phone was powered off, the anxiety and impatience in his expression became increasingly obvious.
I watched him blankly, my foot catching on something I hadn’t noticed. My knee slammed hard against the corner of the table, the bone throbbing with sharp pain.
Not wanting Song Yuan to notice, I endured the pain and quickly sat down on the nearby sofa.
Hearing the commotion, Song Yuan turned back with a hint of hesitation. When he saw me, his thin lips were pressed into a tight line. It took a long while before he finally spoke.
“The rain is too heavy. She wasn’t in a good headspace when she left. I can’t let anything happen to her.”
A piercing pain shot up from my knee. I bit my lip, the plea almost escaping from between my teeth. “Don’t go, okay?”
“I’m sorry, Tang Min.” He didn’t hesitate for a single second.
The last few strings in my mind snapped.
The pride I had been clinging to could no longer sustain me. I struggled to my feet and limped toward him, my vision instantly blurring with tears.
“Song Yuan, you certainly do owe me an apology.”
Taking a deep breath, I haphazardly wiped away my tears with the back of my hand. “Since you never let her go, why did you even get together with me?”
“Was I just a compromise? Or a pastime to fill the void?”
By the time I reached the word “pastime,” my voice was choked with sobs.
Still, I looked up at him, stubbornly seeking an answer even though I already knew the outcome. My body swayed, and I began to collapse.
Song Yuan was quick, catching me by the waist. “What happened to your leg?”
I looked at him and said nothing.
Song Yuan’s eyes darkened. Without a word, he scooped me up in his arms and carried me to the sofa.
After returning with the medical kit, he slowly rolled up my pant leg. The cautious, gentle way he moved made me daze for a moment.
My right knee was already swollen, with a significant patch of scraped skin. A trail of bright red blood snaked down my calf-a startling sight.
I hadn’t realized it was this serious.
Song Yuan’s frown deepened. He took out some antiseptic to disinfect the wound, his voice raspy. “Bear with it.”
The next second, a cold sensation hit my knee. The pain was so sharp that I instantly gripped his arm, my nails nearly digging into his flesh.
Song Yuan let me hold on without a word of complaint.
Once the disinfection was finally done, Song Yuan pulled out a tube of ointment, but it was clearly empty.
“I’ll go down and buy some,” he said, standing up.
I suddenly grabbed his arm, my eyes reddening.
He paused, his long lashes drooping, looking almost tender. “The pharmacy is just downstairs. It’ll take ten minutes at most. I’ll be right back.”
