Chapter 2

Dad and Mom were fighting again.

It was because Anxin had fallen down the stairs.

Mom hadn’t touched her.

Anxin didn’t say Mom had touched her, either.

She just had red eyes and said timidly, “Brother, it has nothing to do with my sister-in-law. I was just being careless…”

Mom was filled with shock. She said, “I didn’t do it.”

Dad spoke through gritted teeth. “Fine, you didn’t do it!”

He gave her a cold look, then picked up Anxin and rushed to the hospital.

I grabbed Dad.

I opened my mouth, wanting to say: Mom didn’t push Aunt Anxin at all. I saw it; she fell down on purpose.

But I couldn’t say it.

Once again, my right to speak had been stripped away.

In that moment, the restricted anger lit a small flame in my heart.

I really wanted to scream and shout.

But I couldn’t lose my temper.

Aunt Zhang said that the more you are framed by a ‘green tea’ manipulator, the more you have to keep your composure.

I pleaded, “Dad, don’t go. Can’t we just call a doctor to the house?”

But Dad’s face grew even gloomier.

“Song Wanqing, you’re even using the child? Don’t make me look down on you.”

Mom was trembling, her lip bitten and her eyes red.

“Yu Zhenting, you should go to the hospital too-to get your brain checked.”

Once again, they parted on bad terms.

I couldn’t understand.

Why?

Why was it like this?

Why couldn’t things be explained clearly?

Why was Mom being blamed again?

Inside my small body, I carried heavy worries that were nearly bending my spine.

It wasn’t until a small incident happened at kindergarten that I realized some things are truly difficult to explain.

Human prejudice is an invisible barrier that perfectly separates perception from the truth.

A new girl at kindergarten, Yibao, wanted a piece of meat from my lunch tray.

She could have just asked me, but she insisted on trying to snatch it.

She wasn’t even good at snatching; instead, she ended up falling flat on her bottom.

She wailed at the top of her lungs.

“Meat, my meat! Yaya, please don’t steal my meat, and please don’t push me, okay?”

Everyone rushed to comfort her, looking at me with reproachful eyes.

I said loudly, “You were the one trying to steal my meat, not the other way around!”

But Yibao just blinked her eyes and pitifully placed a piece of meat from her own bowl into mine.

“Don’t be mad, Yaya. I’ll give you my piece of meat too.”

That meat had gristle on it and teeth marks; it was something she had spat out because she didn’t want to eat it.

She was actually trying to disgust me like this.

“I’m not eating that!”

But then Yibao’s lunch tray fell.

The teacher, who had always doted on me, scolded me angrily, “Yaya, you can’t be so rude!”

I froze, and then I went wild.

I refused to suffer in silence like my mother.

I threw her lunch tray again, then my own, and then the trays of everyone who was protecting her.

Since no one was going to let me eat in peace, then nobody was going to eat.

That day, things blew up.

The kindergarten teacher called our parents.

Mom came, and she chose to believe me.

She sternly demanded to see the surveillance footage.

The footage was very clear: it was Yibao who had tried to snatch my meat.

However, Yibao’s parents also arrived-it was Dad and Anxin.

Yibao cried and buried her head in Dad’s arms.

“Daddy, I thought my meat had run away into Yaya’s bowl, so I went to get it. I was just hungry and wanted to eat meat. Daddy, please don’t ignore me.”

That day, the facts were cleared up.

However, things only got worse.

The kindergarten teacher said with a sour expression that I had a bad temper for flipping over other people’s food.

Mom and Dad had a huge fight, questioning why Anxin had a child and why Yibao called him “Daddy.”

Anxin made a scene, crying and threatening to leave, then fainted. The hospital found that her heart condition had worsened.

Grandma said Mom hadn’t raised me well. Even Kong Rong knew how to yield the larger pears; yet for a piece of meat, I was being so petty.

Everyone went to the hospital to visit Anxin.

Only Mom stayed with me.

The two of us stared at each other, both feeling very depressed.

I deeply felt the isolation and helplessness Mom had experienced-the feeling of being unable to defend oneself despite being right.

I asked Mom, “Mom, is it because I’m not good that Dad became Yibao’s daddy?”

What I really wanted to ask was: Mom, is it because I’m a burden to you that everything has become so much worse?

After Mom died, I began using the same manipulative tactics that the mistress once used to frame her, turning them against my father.

I watched as he was torn apart by public outcry. I...
