Chapter 7
At noon, the restaurant delivered a few of my favorite dishes. After eating, I wrote for a while, and since the weather was nice, I decided to go out for a walk.
Thinking about how generous Jiang Cheng had been, and remembering how I ruined his tie and shirt yesterday, I thought, maybe I should compensate him.
I went to the brand he often wears and browsed around.
Good grief, I hadn’t seen a single item under five figures. Is this guy wearing a dragon robe or something?
The sales assistant politely asked, “Ma’am, are you picking out a shirt for your husband? Would you like me to introduce some options?”
I smiled awkwardly. “Um, which is your cheapest one?”
She was slightly taken aback, then pointed to one:
“This is last year’s model and we’re out of most sizes, so it’s on sale. What size does your husband wear?”
How would I know what size he wears?
I picked up one that looked about right and held it up to myself. It was big, and long.
He should be able to wear it…
I also picked out the cheapest tie, gritted my teeth, and swiped my card.
Carrying the shopping bag, I hadn’t even left the mall when I unexpectedly ran into someone.
Xie Chuan’s girlfriend, Xu Wei.
I hadn’t planned to greet her-our relationship was already awkward-but she called out to me:
“Gu Qiao.”
I looked closely and saw her eyes were red, as if she was about to cry.
“Is something wrong, Miss Xu?” I asked, puzzled.
“Xie Chuan and I broke up.”
She bit her lip, her voice full of sorrow.
“Because of you.”
I was speechless. “Miss Xu, we’ve only met once, haven’t we? Isn’t that a bit funny?”
“I thought he hated you, hated you for abandoning him back then, so I deliberately made things difficult for you.”
Xu Wei clenched her fingers tightly, her voice slightly choked:
“I thought I was different in his heart, but he still can’t forget his White Moonlight. Gu Qiao, you’re not worthy of Xie Chuan. I don’t know what I lack compared to you. I’m younger than you…”
I impatiently waved my hand to interrupt her. “Yes, you’re younger than me. I really envy that you’ll never grow old.”
I sneered. Never underestimate the ability of a web novelist to throw shade.
“And Miss Xu, I really hate all this female rivalry stuff, and I hate it even more when people talk about who’s worthy of whom. If you keep this up, I really won’t be able to hold back from cursing.”
Xu Wei opened her mouth, eyes red, and argued:
“But I really love Xie Chuan. Didn’t you dump him back then because he had no money?”
I shook my head and smiled indifferently:
“Then what is it that Miss Xu likes about him? His successful career? His good looks and wealth?”
Xu Wei was stunned and didn’t answer.
I said calmly, “If Xie Chuan didn’t have any of this now, would you still like him? If he couldn’t buy you designer bags, if even eating out was a problem, would you still like him? Or how long would that feeling last? A year, two years, maybe three or five?
“Yes, Xie Chuan and I did have a brief relationship that ended without resolution years ago. As for who was right or wrong, I think outsiders have no right to judge. I have a clear conscience. We’ve been broken up for years, and I’ve deliberately kept my distance, so if your problems with him involve me, there’s really no need.”
I smiled nonchalantly. “Besides, I’m not in the habit of going back to old flames.”
