Watching Zheng Shushuang cry harder and harder, Wang Ming knew something terrible must have happened.
Could it be… the same as Zhang Jian?
God.
He didn’t even dare think about it. If that were the case, wouldn’t he be held responsible?
But this morning, Jia Fang was clearly still breathing, even snoring slightly.
Wang Ming grew frantic as well.
He lunged toward Zheng Shushuang, grabbing her shoulders and shaking her. “What happened to your mom!”
Zheng Shushuang’s face was a mask of tears. She didn’t acknowledge him at all, her wailing only growing louder.
Between sobs, she cried out, “Mom… Dad…”
Wang Ming shook her harder. “Calm down! What exactly happened to your mom?”
His heart was in his throat, a sense of foreboding washing over him.
Zheng Shushuang snapped out of it for a moment. She looked at Wang Ming through tear-blurred eyes, her hands tightly clutching the hem of her JK skirt, her voice trembling violently.
“My mom… she… she…”
“She passed away! They couldn’t save her!”
Wang Ming’s head buzzed.
It was like a bolt from the blue.
Zheng Shushuang calmed down slightly, looking at Wang Ming helplessly. “Drive me to the hospital!”
Wang Ming shook his head vigorously to steady himself, then reached out to pull her up and headed down the mountain.
Along the way, both of them looked like they had lost their souls.
They nearly tripped several times.
Once they reached the bottom, Wang Ming hurriedly opened the car door for Zheng Shushuang to sit in the passenger seat, then quickly slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine.
Zheng Shushuang’s eyes were vacant, tears streaming down her face as she muttered periodically, “Mom, Dad…”
[Beep…]
[Bound target has disappeared.]
[System task automatically cancelled.]
Wang Ming’s head buzzed again.
Using his consciousness, he clicked on the Bound target section of the System interface.
Only Zou Shuqing, Li Zhixuan, and Jiang Yao remained.
Jia Fang’s System task and avatar had vanished.
She really was dead!
He and Zheng Shushuang had been about to reach the summit; the task had been so close to completion.
Compared to the task, Jia Fang’s death was even harder to accept. She had clearly been breathing fine this morning!
It should have been impossible!
“What exactly happened to your mother?” Wang Ming asked anxiously while driving.
“My mom… sob…”
Zheng Shushuang was too emotional to explain anything.
When they arrived at the hospital, Zheng Shushuang scrambled out of the car.
Wang Ming wanted to follow her, but after a moment’s thought, he realized he couldn’t show his face.
He shouted toward the retreating figure of Zheng Shushuang, “I’ll wait for you here!”
Zheng Shushuang didn’t answer, simply running toward the hospital entrance.
By the time she entered the hospital, she was sobbing so hard she couldn’t speak. A nurse led her to the morgue.
When the white sheet was slowly pulled back to reveal Jia Fang’s pale face, Zheng Shushuang collapsed to the floor, letting out a heart-wrenching wail.
Her grandmother was also there, eyes full of tears. She had sent someone to bring Jia Fang nutritional supplements just this afternoon, and now the woman was lying there, cold and lifeless.
Back in the parking lot, Wang Ming was sitting on pins and needles. Every second felt like he was being roasted over a fire.
Time crawled like a snail, and with every passing minute, his heart tightened further.
His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as he stared fixedly at the hospital doors.
Suddenly, his phone rang. The screen showed an incoming call from Zou Shuqing.
Already agitated, the ringing only made Wang Ming feel more flustered. Zou Shuqing’s concerned voice came through the receiver.
He was in no mood for conversation, offering only a few perfunctory words before hurriedly hanging up.
After ending the call, he couldn’t help but sigh to himself.
He had gone too far yesterday. Sigh… what was he supposed to do now? His beautiful life had only just begun.
She was about to go in!
After a long time, Zheng Shushuang finally returned to the car.
She was no longer wailing as she had been before, but was merely sobbing. It seemed her tears had run dry; her eyes were hollow and filled with despair.
Seeing her return, Wang Ming asked impatiently and anxiously, “What on earth happened? Your mother…”
Zheng Shushuang didn’t answer. She just stared straight through the windshield, muttering to herself with venom in her voice:
“I will find out who you are! You destroyed my family! I’ll make sure you pay for this in blood!”
Wang Ming felt his head spin. An ominous premonition grew stronger. Had Jia Fang really ended up like Zhang Jian? A sudden death?
Zheng Shushuang suddenly whipped her head around and stared directly at Wang Ming. “Do you care about me?”
Wang Ming froze for a moment before nodding. “Um, of course I do.”
A bitter smile played at the corners of Zheng Shushuang’s mouth. “It was love at first sight for you, wasn’t it? That’s why you care so much.”
Wang Ming hesitated but nodded anyway, continuing to press for answers. “Can you tell me what happened?”
He was filled with doubt. If it really was a sudden death, the police should have tracked him down by now, but they hadn’t contacted him at all.
His heart was being put through the wringer.
Zheng Shushuang wiped her nose with a tissue, took a deep breath, and said slowly:
“I’m quite fond of you too. Out of all the boyfriends I’ve had, you’ve got the stamina, you’ve got the money, and your looks aren’t bad either.
“However, I’m in no mood for a relationship right now. I have to find the culprit!”
Growing increasingly anxious, Wang Ming said loudly, “Maybe I can help you. Just tell me what happened!”
Zheng Shushuang’s gaze suddenly turned icy. She spoke one word at a time: “My mother was… killed by my father.”
“What?” Wang Ming blurted out.
His eyes widened, unable to believe his ears.
“Are… are you sure?” Wang Ming stammered.
“I admit, my mother was a bit flirtatious, but that’s not a crime! People have desires, after all.”
Zheng Shushuang choked back a sob and looked at Wang Ming. “I’ll tell you about our family’s dirty laundry today. I really… I don’t know who else I can talk to about this!”
Wang Ming nodded slightly, unable to suppress the inquisitive look in his eyes.
“My father came home this afternoon and saw several rooms in a total mess.
“My mother was sleeping in the bedroom. It was quite a scene.
“My dad saw a bunch of hickeys on her neck and her bruised skin. He knew something was up, so he checked the surveillance footage.
“He had secretly installed cameras all over the house; my mother didn’t even know.
“As it turned out…
“My mother… she brought a man home…”
Wang Ming swallowed hard, breaking into a cold sweat.
Zheng Shushuang continued, “My dad woke her up to interrogate her, but she refused to admit it.
“My dad took out the surveillance memory card, and my mom just snapped it in half.”
Wang Ming’s heart skipped a beat, and he swallowed hard again.
“My dad flew into a rage and got into a scuffle with her. My mom… she hit the back of her head on the corner of the table… they couldn’t save her.”
Wang Ming finally breathed a sigh of relief. The reason for the fight was him, but the cause of death had nothing to do with him!
Zheng Shushuang hadn’t seen the surveillance footage either, so she had no idea who the man was.
He calmed his nerves and spoke slowly. “Where is your father?”
“He’s already been detained. I must find that man! I’ll tear him to pieces!
“Agh!”
Zheng Shushuang let out a roar of pure rage.
