After work, Wang Ming returned to his apartment building. He looked across at the small two-story house, where smoke was curling up from the chimney.

Jia Fang was preparing dinner.

Back inside his home, Wang Ming opened the refrigerator and saw the Red Bull and medicinal wine Jia Fang had put inside. A slight smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

His gaze then landed on a leather belt hanging on the wall. He wondered to himself if Jia Fang would like it.

He took the belt down and snapped it twice in the air. The sharp “crack-crack” of the air displacement was piercing.

Should he go out and buy a couple of candles too?

Jia Fang had been keeping a close eye on the apartment building, and she finally saw Wang Ming’s car. She immediately dialed his number.

As soon as the call connected, Jia Fang’s shy voice came through:

“When you come over in a bit, come through the back of the yard. It won’t do if people see you entering my house and never leaving.”

Wang Ming chuckled in response. “I’m just coming over for a meal. I’ll leave once I’m done eating.”

Jia Fang’s tone held a hint of a reproachful pout. “Are you really just coming for a meal?”

Wang Ming played dumb on purpose. “What else?”

Jia Fang huffed. “You bad thing, you know perfectly well what for, yet you insist on making me spell it out. I’m almost afraid you’re going to record this and blackmail me for money.”

Wang Ming continued to tease her. “If you don’t explain what else we’re doing, I’m not coming.”

“Stop messing around and just come eat. I’ve got big, sweet, fragrant steamed buns waiting for you.”
