Chapter 19
Li Zhixuan was amused by Wang Ming’s words, her tense expression relaxing a little. “So you mean, you’ll take Zhang Jian’s place to accompany me, and I’ll take Zhang Jian’s place to accompany you?”
“Zhang Jian hasn’t touched you in ages…”
Before Wang Ming could finish, a faint sobbing seemed to echo from the morgue.
Both of them shuddered violently.
Wang Ming’s heart skipped a beat. Could Zhang Jian’s spirit be listening to their conversation and be so angry that he’s about to come back to life?
“You heard it too?” Li Zhixuan asked Wang Ming.
Wang Ming nodded stiffly and shuffled over to the morgue door, peering inside.
Zhang Jian lay there quietly.
Li Zhixuan walked over as well, then said calmly, “Your buddy knows I need more company!”
Wang Ming hurriedly covered Li Zhixuan’s mouth. “Stop talking!”
Li Zhixuan struggled free and shouted, “What’s there to be afraid of!
I’m the one handling his body, and you’re paying for his funeral! We haven’t wronged him in the slightest-if anything, he’s the one who let me down!”
Wang Ming nodded. “Alright, you’re right, but respect for the dead.”
He returned to the main topic: “By the way, when do you plan to notify Zhang Jian’s parents?”
Li Zhixuan’s expression dimmed again. “I want to wait until everything’s ready before telling them.
I’m worried they’ll rush over from far away and be unable to handle it, getting all flustered.”
“If it’s too much, you can arrange everything first and then let the police notify them.”
Li Zhixuan looked at Wang Ming gratefully. “Mm, that’s a good idea.”
Just as they were speaking, the sobbing sound faintly echoed again, making both of them freeze instantly.
This time it was crystal clear to them.
Cold sweat broke out on Wang Ming’s back, and Li Zhixuan felt her scalp tingle, as if tiny bugs were crawling all over her skull.
Though Li Zhixuan had been tough-talking earlier, her face was now deathly pale, her lips drained of color.
“Wh-what on earth is going on?”
Li Zhixuan stammered, her eyes fixed on the corpse lying quietly in the morgue, terrified it might sit up at any moment.
Wang Ming took a deep breath, trying hard to steady himself.
“Maybe… maybe it’s just the wind. This place is creepy, it’s normal to hear things.”
Suddenly, the morgue lights began to flicker, the illumination wavering as if someone was playing with the switch.
Li Zhixuan was so frightened she pressed herself tightly against Wang Ming.
“Could it really be Zhang Jian’s ghost haunting us?” Li Zhixuan’s teeth began to chatter.
Wang Ming had never been afraid of ghosts, and now with the System he felt there was nothing to fear.
But he hadn’t done anything wrong, just promised to take care of Li Zhixuan for Zhang Jian. There was nothing to feel guilty about yet.
“Even if it’s Zhang Jian, he wouldn’t hurt us. One’s his brother, the other his girlfriend.”
As Wang Ming finished speaking, faint footsteps slowly echoed from deep within the morgue.
One step, two steps… the footsteps were slow, drawing closer and closer.
Wang Ming and Li Zhixuan stared wide-eyed, fixated on the direction of the sound.
A white figure slowly emerged from the corridor, gradually coming into view.
Wang Ming saw it was a person and his heartbeat steadied a little.
Li Zhixuan still clung tightly to Wang Ming’s arm.
As the white figure became clearer, they saw he was holding a broom in one hand and a dustpan in the other.
Turns out he was just sweeping the floor carefully, which explained his slow pace!
Li Zhixuan let out a long sigh of relief, only then realizing she was clutching Wang Ming’s arm and quickly let go.
Wang Ming smiled slightly, teasing, “You talk tough, but you’re scared out of your mind.”
Li Zhixuan retorted stubbornly, “I’m a staunch atheist!”
At that moment, the crying started again, mixed with shouts: “Ah… ah… let me out!”
Li Zhixuan clung tightly to Wang Ming again, holding onto his arm and exclaiming in terror, “There’s really someone! No, it’s a ghost! Could it be Zhang Jian?”
Wang Ming frowned, listening carefully. “No, it’s a woman’s voice. It’s coming from next door!”
Wang Ming quickly walked toward the next room-it was a cold storage room.
There was a thudding sound from one of the cold storage cabinets, and the woman’s voice was coming from inside it.
Wang Ming felt a bit uneasy and stood at the doorway, observing.
Li Zhixuan’s eyes filled with tears, and she said with a sob, “Is there really a ghost?”
“Help! Help!” The woman’s cries and sobs grew even more desperate.
Wang Ming shook his head and said firmly, “That’s a living person.”
He walked over to the cabinet, pulled hard on the handle, and as the door opened, a pair of flailing woman’s legs appeared before his eyes.
Seeing the light, the woman cried out anxiously, “Help me! Please, help me!”
Wang Ming hurriedly grabbed her ankles and pulled her out of the cold storage cabinet with all his strength.
The woman collapsed onto the floor.
Though the room was dim, the woman still couldn’t adjust and instinctively raised her hand to shield her eyes.
Her whole body trembled, her face full of terror.
Her hair was disheveled, her makeup was exquisite but clearly done in the style of a corpse.
Her white clothes were wrinkled, making her look just like someone who had come back from the dead.
Wang Ming crouched carefully beside her and asked softly, “If you’re not dead, why were you locked in the cold storage cabinet?”
The woman sobbed for a long time before stammering, “I… I don’t know either. It kept getting colder inside. I thought I was going to die…”
Standing at the doorway, Li Zhixuan’s trembling body slowly relaxed.
“Is it really not a ghost?” Li Zhixuan didn’t dare get too close to the woman, glancing nervously up and down the corridor, which felt eerie.
Feeling safer near Wang Ming, she quickly moved behind him, her voice still choked with tears:
“Is she a person or a ghost?”
“I’m a person!”
The woman, hugging her knees, shouted, her body still shaking uncontrollably. She sobbed as she tried to recall what had happened.
Seeing how badly she was trembling, Wang Ming reached out, wanting to take her outside to get some sunlight.
The moment his hand touched her clothes, he felt a chill.
It was too dangerous-if he and Li Zhixuan hadn’t heard her, the woman might have frozen to death in the cabinet after a few hours.
Wang Ming helped her up. “Come on, let’s get you into the sun. You’re too cold.”
Li Zhixuan was still shaken, clinging tightly to Wang Ming’s shirt, not daring to open her eyes to look at the woman.
The woman’s feet were so numb from the cold that she could barely walk, moving slowly and almost being carried out by Wang Ming.
As they left the gloomy building, the moment the warm sunlight hit her, the woman suddenly raised her hand to shield her eyes and cried out, “Ah!”
Seeing this, Wang Ming quickly reached out to help block the sunlight for her. “Looks like you’ve been in there a long time. You’re really lucky to be alive.”
Li Zhixuan, now sure the woman was alive, gradually felt her fear fade away.
She stepped out from behind Wang Ming and began to examine the woman carefully.
The woman’s messy hair covered her face, but her trembling body made it clear how terrified she was.
“She was probably in a state of suspended animation and her family mistakenly thought she was dead, so they sent her to the Crematorium,” Wang Ming muttered. Li Zhixuan nodded thoughtfully.
“No! I was murdered!”
