“Two men together… what, are you going to bear him a child one day?”
The biting sarcasm in her voice hit me like a physical blow. I rubbed the ring on my finger, forcing myself to suppress my rising temper.
“Neither Yuen nor I are particularly fond of children.”
His mother gave a cold, thin smile and pulled up a video for me to watch.
In the footage, a younger Tong Yuen was holding an infant.
His movements were stiff and awkward, yet his expression was filled with a mix of tenderness and joy.
“Ah, he’s so soft.”
“When are you going to learn how to call me Uncle?”
The video froze at the moment Tong Yuen lowered his head to press his cheek against his little nephew’s forehead.
His mother looked at me. “Do you really think he doesn’t like children?”
“Or is it that you’ve stripped him of his right to have a biological child of his own?”
I opened my mouth to speak, but the words died in my throat.
“That little studio you started with your friend is finally seeing some success, isn’t it?”
“Mr. Fu, let me remind you of one thing: in the adult world, interests and benefits come first.”
She left the warning hanging there, having said just enough.
As I stood up and walked out of the clubhouse, I looked up at the bright, scorching sun, yet a sudden, bone-deep chill washed over me.
