Chapter 9
“They even put a few snakes in the water vat. They were slithering up the seams of my pants… it was absolutely disgusting.”
Brother Da looked like he was on the verge of tears. He walked over, grabbed a steamed bun, and began devouring it. From the way he was wolfing it down, it was clear he hadn’t eaten in days. He was a former mercenary from abroad and was incredibly skilled in combat. Even though Jiang Haoyan was tall, Brother Da could probably take down two guys like him with a single punch.
Now that even he couldn’t escape, the others were plunged into despair. The group of seniors sighed and groaned, following his lead to go over and eat the buns.
“Forget it. Let’s just observe the situation for a couple of days before we try to figure something out,”
President Xu took two bites, then suddenly pointed at the water vat and let out a sharp “Ah!”
We hurried over. “President Xu, do you have an idea?”
President Xu shook his head. “I’m choking. Can someone give me a sip of water?”
Me: …
This bunch of old folks really is useless.
After breakfast, Boss Hou took us to the farmland behind the village to work. He wasn’t lying; it was real farm work-planting rice seedlings in the paddies. Everyone obediently waded in except for me. I stood at the edge of the field, locked in a staring contest with Boss Hou.
“Don’t push me,” I said. “If you push me too far, there’s no telling what I’ll do.”
Boss Hou flinched. He swallowed hard, pursed his lips, and stepped aside. Seeing this, Liu Xiong immediately tried to copy me and scrambled out of the field.
“Don’t push me! Do you have any idea who I am? I-”
Before he could finish his sentence, Boss Hou slapped Liu Xiong across the face. Liu Xiong’s eyes rolled back into his head, and his body went limp as he collapsed. Out of nowhere, several old men scurried over and efficiently carried him away.
“Boss! Let go of my boss!”
Brother Da came charging over.
Boss Hou let out a cold snort.
“Throw him into the water vat. Toss in a few water rats while you’re at it.”
Brother Da reached the edge of the field, but instead of attacking, he swiftly bent over and started planting rice seedlings.
And so, under Boss Hou’s intimidation, the group honestly set to work in the fields. It was the height of summer. While there was a slight breeze in the morning, the air soon became as stifling as an oven, with nothing but scorching heat baking the tops of their heads and their backs.
I waved at Jiang Haoyan, motioning for him to come over and take a break.
