chapter 1
I am a Mortician.
Tonight, I must stitch together the corpse of my boyfriend, Gao Min.
He died during his first public magic performance. In the Human Dismemberment segment, he was sawed into countless pieces.
When the assistant opened the box, severed limbs and blood poured out in a torrent.
The theater audience, viewers around the world, all witnessed this scene.
I rushed to the scene, collapsed to my knees, and sobbed uncontrollably.
I have handled countless tragedies, but none as shocking as the one before me. What baffles me most is this:
The corpse fragments in the magic box were numerous and shattered, his internal organs mangled beyond recognition, yet Gao Min’s handsome face remained intact.
His lips curled upward in a strange smile.
We had been together for years; I knew his habits well. Only when he was truly enjoying the stage would he show such an expression.
But who could still smile when murdered? Who could still smile?
Gao Min’s murder shocked the world.
The once unknown Magician instantly became a household name.
People saw his exquisite street magic and were captivated by his witty style.
Everyone called him a genius Magician and mourned his untimely fall.
“Could someone have tampered with the props out of jealousy?” I couldn’t understand.
My boyfriend was obsessed with magic, not a social person-who could he have offended?
Captain Fang, who was in charge of the case, told me the killer remained a mystery.
“There was a malfunction in the magic box’s mechanism.”
“But backstage surveillance showed that only Gao Min approached the box, and only his fingerprints were inside.”
“He… very likely dismembered himself.”
I felt insulted and slammed the table, exclaiming how absurd it was. I spoke earnestly:
“I know Gao Min. He was an ambitious man, absolutely not someone who would commit suicide. Impossible!”
To solve the case, I threw myself into my work without hesitation, beginning to stitch with extraordinary perseverance.
When I reached the stomach pouch, a slip of paper fell out.
It was an invitation sprinkled with gold dust, neatly addressed to me at the top.
“Dear Wanwan.”
It was unmistakably Gao Min’s handwriting!
My eyes widened in shock.
Inside, there was only one sentence:
“The Greatest Magic of the 21st Century has begun, darling. Let’s witness the miracle together.”
