Chapter 5

When I returned home, Shen Sui wasn’t there.

I turned on the lights and stood in the living room, my gaze sweeping over every inch of the space.

This was just one of his countless properties, yet I had obsessively called it “home.”

In the past, I loved sitting on that sofa waiting for Shen Sui.

That way, I could greet him the very moment he walked through the door.

But he always said I was too clingy.

The door suddenly opened.

Shen Sui bent down to take out a pair of slippers, his brow furrowed.

His gaze fell on my feet.

“Why are you walking around barefoot again?

“Where did you go?”

I didn’t rush up to hug him like I usually did, standing on my tiptoes to kiss his chin and telling him clingily how much I missed him.

Shen Sui narrowed his eyes slightly.

Seemingly displeased, he strode over and swept me up into his arms.

“The floor is cold.”

Shen Sui looked down at me and said with a faint smile, “Upset?

“I didn’t ignore your messages on purpose. I was busy today.”

I struggled out of his embrace, unable to suppress a self-mocking laugh.

He didn’t even realize that he and I had been at the same event, or that I was the one Lu Li had replaced.

Shen Sui looked at me with complete lack of understanding, his tone indifferent.

“I’ve been spoiling you too much lately.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose, looking weary.

I stared at him, a dull ache throbbing in my heart.

It really is impolite to keep knocking on a door that was never meant to open for you.

“Shen Sui.”

This name, which I had called out countless times, would have nothing to do with me from this day forward.

“Let’s cancel the engagement. You’re free.”

Shen Sui’s movements stiffened, his eyes turning cold. He didn’t even seem to realize how grim his expression had become.

He spoke one word at a time, almost through gritted teeth.

“What did you say?”
