Chapter 4

Zheng Qianfei was so impatient that she skipped lunch and dragged me and Ren Anran back to the dormitory.

She wanted us to be witnesses-witnesses to her and her boyfriend’s very first voice chat.

The call connected, and on the other end, someone called out, “Baby.”

Zheng Qianfei’s face instantly flushed red. She shyly asked, “Did… did you eat yet?”

The other side replied, “No…”

Ren Anran hid to the side, grinning like an aunt, winking at Zheng Qianfei nonstop.

Zheng Qianfei kept pushing her away with her hand while trying hard to find topics to chat with Wu Ranjun.

Wu Ranjun’s voice wasn’t exactly unpleasant, but… it was very strange.

How should I describe it?

This strangeness was different from a lisp.

People with a lisp speak haltingly, their pronunciation feels clumsy, as if their tongue doesn’t obey.

But Wu Ranjun spoke, each word spaced out, not like his tongue was disobedient, but more like… his tongue was too heavy to lift, making speech laborious, so he could only force out one or two words at a time.

This was exactly how Huo Qing had described it!

I listened in silence, my heart pounding, cold sweat breaking out on my forehead.

Zheng Qianfei was immersed in the excitement of her first voice call with her boyfriend, completely unconcerned by Wu Ranjun’s oddness.

Ren Anran tilted her ear, listening to their conversation with great interest, her eyes shining, looking even more excited than Zheng Qianfei.

Zheng Qianfei immediately sent the recording to the four-person dorm group, even tagging Huo Qing: [The dead person spoke up-do you dare to listen?]

After sending the message, the two of them clutched their phones, eager to see Huo Qing’s reaction.

Soon, Huo Qing replied with eight words: [You should play it and listen for yourselves.]

Suspicious, I clicked on the recording.

The sound that came out made all three of our faces change dramatically.

In the recording, only Zheng Qianfei was speaking. The voice replying to her… was not human at all.

It was a series of strange low moans, sounding like the rumbling from a monster’s throat-a deep voice, sharp and tinged with a tearing distortion.

It was a sound no human could ever make!
