Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Shi Juan wasn’t far from my current location.
That’s what the System told me.
I didn’t react at first.
It was only later that I realized why, and I let out a self-deprecating laugh.
I was being sentimental.
It was simply because there was a branch of the largest traditional Chinese medicine chain in the North near this villa. Many rare or limited-edition medicines could be found there.
Back when I used to have stomach issues, Shi Juan would get up in the middle of the night for me.
He would throw on a coat and head out to buy medicine for me.
Then, he would force himself to stay awake all night, sitting on a small stool in the kitchen, fanning the flames as he decocted the herbs bit by bit.
That was always his way.
When he cared for someone, he held them in the palm of his hand.
He would keep them in his thoughts every moment, constantly worrying.
He was terrified of letting you suffer even the slightest grievance.
It was precisely because we had shared such intimate times that his lack of love now was all the more glaring.
The System asked if I wanted to go take a look.
I nodded.
Of course.
After all, this was the final farewell.
There was only one main road leading toward the pharmacy.
I put on my coat and stepped out of the house.
After walking a few hundred meters, I reached a T-junction that served as the only way through.
It was evening now, around eight or nine o’clock.
In winter, the sky turns dark quickly.
At this moment, the night was already deep and somber.
The streetlights behind me flickered on, casting a dim, yellowish glow.
I stood beneath one, and a few moths happened to flutter past my eyes.
In that moment, I actually felt a flicker of hesitation.
Did I really want to keep wasting my time on Shi Juan?
There were only three or four hours left until midnight.
I could use this time to watch a movie, listen to the songs I liked, or take a walk along the beach and pick up a few seashells.
Any of those would count as a decent, precious final memory to leave behind in this world.
“Chang Xue.”
It was the System’s voice.
This time, it rarely addressed me by my name instead of calling me Host.
I gave a soft hum in response and then reflexively looked up.
A blinding light hit me.
In the distance, a silver-white sports car was racing toward me at high speed.
It was Shi Juan’s car.
It was going too fast.
I shielded my eyes; the high beams were practically blinding me.
“Are you sure about this?”
Yes.
Because I saw a little girl carrying a backpack, just about to cross the road.

Broken Promise
I’ve spent five years trying to win Shi Juan’s heart.
As long as he proposed to me on my birthday, I would have been allowed to stay in this world.
But I waited until the...
