Chapter 7
Chapter 7
When I got to school, my new deskmate started rattling his Turtle Shell again.
He’d gotten upset when I called it a turtle shell before, insisting it was a Divine Artifact left to him by his grandfather for Divination.
Jiang Shang was in the middle of shaking it when the homeroom teacher spotted him through the window.
Once the teacher confiscated his Turtle Shell, he slumped onto the desk, looking completely dejected.
I couldn’t help but tease him.
“Master Jiang, how come you didn’t see this disaster coming?”
Jiang Shang’s face turned red with frustration. After stuttering for a long while, he snapped back, “You don’t understand! A fortune teller cannot calculate their own fate!”
He then turned his back on me and ignored me.
When he finally turned back around, he asked me for my Eight Characters.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Your Eight Characters… they’re precarious!”
I didn’t take him seriously, assuming he was just playing around.
To my surprise, Jiang Shang grew increasingly solemn as he spoke.
“The way I see it, your life… is a Destitute Fate!”
I rolled my eyes at him as he sat there, earnestly counting on his fingers.
The student sitting in front of us overheard and laughed.
“Master Jiang, take a look at your deskmate. Her father is the most famous Investment Master in our city.”
“A Destitute Fate? She’s loaded, okay? Like, seriously rich.”
I continued to roll my eyes at Jiang Shang.
Jiang Shang grew frantic, forgetting to hide his missing front tooth as he shouted, “That’s impossible! I guarantee my calculations are correct.”
“Unless some supernatural entity has performed an Alter Fate on you… though I can’t tell if it’s for better or worse…”
“Furthermore, your life is in danger. If you had been born just one hour earlier, your Fate Pattern would have dictated that you’d never reach adulthood.”
My breath suddenly hitched in my throat.
