Chapter 5

My sister was reported for cheating.

But everyone knew she was the most diligent student in school-diligent to a terrifying degree.

Ever since she started high school, she was always the first to arrive and the last to leave.

I didn’t believe for a second that she would cheat.

This was our only chance to escape this family.

The boy insisted that my sister had copied from him.

“Teacher, I’m reporting Chen Wenjing for copying my exam!”

“Otherwise, how could her answers be identical to mine?”

The whistleblower, Xu Jiamu, had always been a top student with an excellent reputation. His words carried weight, making people instinctively believe him.

The surrounding classmates began to waver, and whispers started to spread through the room.

Before the head teacher could say anything else, my father appeared. He dragged my sister away, beating and cursing her as they went.

“You bitch! You’re a disgrace to my name!”

“You useless waste! Why don’t you just go die!”

Half the school came out to watch the spectacle.

By the time I ran down from the laboratory building, my sister’s eyes were fixed in a numb, lifeless stare. She looked so fragile, as if she were on the verge of death.

My father tried to strike her again, but I threw myself in the way, crying and desperately trying to stop him.

In that moment of distraction, I didn’t notice that my sister had already jumped into the man-made lake behind us.
