Chapter 4
Chapter 4
My sister and I are twins, and we look exactly alike.
The only difference is the birthmark on her face.
It’s shaped like a koi fish, and it isn’t actually ugly. But in my parents’ eyes, a girl without a perfect face is a girl who can’t be married off.
And to them, a daughter who can’t be married off is nothing but a waste of space.
Starting from elementary school, my mother dumped all the housework on my sister and me so she could focus entirely on raising our brother, who is a year younger than us.
My mother never had a kind word for my sister. She constantly berated her, calling her a “money-loser” or a “freak” every time she opened her mouth.
When my brother was first learning to speak, the first word he mastered wasn’t “Daddy” or “Mommy.” It was “freak.”
My sister would just offer a faint smile and say nothing.
On the rare occasions she couldn’t take it anymore, she would cling to me in the middle of the night and cry.
She didn’t even dare to make a sound while she sobbed.
Back then, all I could do was rub her back and tell her that things would get better once we grew up.
By then, I said, we could go to a hospital and have the birthmark removed.
We would leave this family where we didn’t belong and go do the things we actually loved.
Except, neither of us ever made it that far.
