Chapter 20
There was no evidence to prove I was the murderer. After 24 hours, I was released.
As I walked out of the Criminal Investigation Team, I saw Deng Xingxing’s parents arguing at the entrance.
Standing beside them were members of their respective new families.
“If it weren’t for your Deng family, would Xingxing have ended up like this? Would she have died?” Mom Deng was furious.
Dad Deng retorted, “Now you’re pretending to be a loving mother? Have you even looked at Xingxing once in all these years?”
A little girl hugged Mom Deng’s leg and called softly, “Mom.”
Mom Deng hurriedly picked her up and kissed her, then said to Dad Deng, “Enough, I don’t want to argue with you. Xingxing can’t be convicted as a murderer. If word gets out, it’ll affect my Lele.”
Dad Deng snorted and picked up the little boy at his feet. “Do you need to say that? My Anan wants to be a high official in the future! Xingxing’s matter must be handled properly. Didn’t you say she called you before about being assaulted? Do you have any evidence?”
Mom Deng’s eyes lit up. “I think my phone automatically records call logs. I’ll check carefully when I get home.”
…
I didn’t listen any further.
I turned and left.
Someone caught up to me. “Let me drive you back.”
I turned to see Zhong Minglang.
The scenery outside the window flashed by as he drove, comforting me, “Things will get better.”
I didn’t respond to that. I just asked, “Did my dad go back to our hometown?”
He nodded. “Don’t worry, I arranged for a colleague to take him to the station. Your mom is home alone, your dad was worried.”
I let out a long sigh of relief, suddenly feeling a bit exhausted.
Zhong Minglang drove me back to school. Before I got out of the car, he solemnly reminded me:
“Stay in touch. If you remember any details or if anything happens, you can call me.”
