chapter 4
When I walked into the office, I saw someone sitting across from the Boss.
The man had his back to me, dressed in a crisp blue suit, his hair perfectly combed, and the shiny yellow leather shoes peeking out from under his chair.
He was speaking, his tone tinged with flattery.
“President Xing, I am both grateful and honored for this opportunity. I, Hu Hui, will certainly live up to your expectations and will conduct a thorough and spotless investigation as you instructed!”
The Boss waved his hand indifferently and introduced us:
“This is Hu Hui, Lawyer Hu.”
“This is Rui Man, the project manager of my company.”
Hu Hui immediately stood up, smiling as he greeted me:
“Minister Rui, hello! Please take care of me! Ah, truly, there are no weak soldiers under a strong general. Minister Rui, you look smart and capable at a glance-surely President Xing has a discerning eye-”
“Enough, you don’t need to keep saying these pleasantries.” The Boss frowned and interrupted him bluntly.
“Yes, yes, of course.”
Hu Hui shut his mouth without changing his expression, not the least bit embarrassed.
I looked at him.
He wasn’t very old, his features were decent, and he wore a constant smile, but there was always a hint of obsequiousness in his eyes and brows.
“Alright, you can go for now. We’ll contact you later.”
The Boss waved his hand casually, dismissing him.
After Hu Hui left, the Boss handed me a bank card.
“Here is 100,000 yuan. Sigh, Professor Sheng died so suddenly. Go to his hometown in the next couple of days and personally give this money to his brother. After all, we were classmates, so consider it both a consulting fee and condolence money-just my way of expressing my feelings.”
“Also, take Hu Hui with you when you go.”
I was taken aback. “Why?”
The Boss sighed again.
“Professor Sheng’s suicide-although the police have given their conclusion, I still feel uneasy. I wasn’t a close friend, but I’ve known him for over ten years. He came from the countryside, worked his way into the city, and became a professor. I know a bit about how hard that journey was. He overcame so many difficulties-how could he suddenly become depressed and commit suicide? So I had someone find a private detective, and I’m letting him go with you to his hometown to investigate. Whatever the result, just like giving the money, it’s my way of doing what I can as a friend.”
I lowered my head and was silent for a moment. “Boss, didn’t you just say he was a lawyer? How is he also a private detective?”
The Boss snorted.
“Lawyer? He lost his license long ago for bribery. No one wants him now, so he opened his own private detective agency. He’s a sycophant, probably not very capable, but he managed to get in with one of my old buddies, so I have to give him some face. You don’t need to take him too seriously. I heard he studied criminal investigation before-just let him run errands and get a sense of the situation.”
