Chapter 7
Chapter 7
That night, I slept with Yu Qingyan.
I drifted off into a deep sleep early on.
In truth, I was picked up by the Zombie Emperor.
In my previous life, I was the owner of a martial arts gym. I had finally managed to give myself a vacation and traveled abroad, only to get caught in a crossfire between local gangs. Thus, on a foreign street, I-a miserable, innocent bystander-was turned into cannon fodder by a stray bullet.
When I woke up again, I turned my head with great difficulty and realized I had transmigrated into the Apocalypse. What’s more, I had become a baby girl abandoned on the side of the road.
I could smell the scent of blood and decay in the air, along with the wet slurping sounds of zombies salivating and the sound of their staggering, approaching footsteps.
Me: “??!”
At that moment, the plot of this novel came flooding into my mind.
This was an apocalyptic romance novel. The Female Lead, Yu Qingyan, was on a mission with her fiancé when she exhausted her superpowers and was seriously injured while protecting her teammates. Her fiancé abandoned her under the guise of “considering the big picture,” and none of the people she had saved opposed him. After everyone left, the scent of blood in the air quickly attracted countless zombies. Seeing no hope for survival, the Female Lead planned to self-detonate and take the zombies down with her.
Then, the Male Lead, Qin Baizhou, arrived! He came! He arrived with his protagonist halo! He was a powerful Psychic Superpower User who had been secretly in love with the Female Lead for a long time. He killed all the zombies and successfully rescued her.
The Female Lead eventually developed feelings for him as they fought side-by-side.
Omit a million words of leveling up, monster hunting, trials, tribulations, and the Second Male Lead jumping around like a desperate, regretful clown.
In the end, the Male Lead and Female Lead defeated the ultimate villain-the Zombie Emperor.
The Apocalypse ended, and they got their Happy Ending.
But that wasn’t the most important thing.
The most important thing was my current situation.
Wait, was I about to get killed as a background character again?
A massive will to live and the fear of facing death once more overwhelmed the logic I was trying to use to analyze the situation.
“Waaaaah-”
A wail so loud it was piercing, filled with the utmost grievance, suddenly erupted from my throat.
Me: “…”
I was stunned.
I couldn’t fully control this infant body. My logic told me not to cry, as it would only attract more zombies! But the more despair and fear I felt, the louder the baby’s cries became.
As the stench of rot and the “ho-ho” sounds of zombies drew closer, I curled into a ball, thinking sadly that I was really going to bite the dust here.
Just as a rotting hand was about to touch the edge of my swaddle-
“Oh? There’s actually a living person here,” a cold, playful voice rang out, tinged with a hint of mockery.
“King, that is not a living person; it is a living infant,” another voice replied matter-of-factly, devoid of emotion, as if simply stating a fact.
“Is an infant not a person?” The pleasant voice sounded slightly speechless.
To my shock, I discovered that with the appearance of these two, the zombies actually stopped moving. Even the “ho-ho” sounds in their throats turned into a sort of fearful whimper as they backed away.
A tall, dark shadow loomed over me, and then I was picked up.
A faint, crisp scent of mint drifted into my nose.
My sobbing gradually slowed down as I struggled to look up.
It was a very young man, looking to be only in his twenties. His exquisitely carved features were sharp and three-dimensional, with a perfect, smooth jawline and a high bridge to his nose. His skin was a cold white, and his deep red lips were slightly upturned, radiating a sense of indifference and cynicism.
A beauty!
A great beauty!
A classic, striking beauty!
I was nearly blinded by his incredible looks.
It was just that those eyes… they weren’t pure black.
They were a beautiful blood-red, like brilliant, translucent rubies-shimmering, gorgeous, and possessing a bewitching, eerie quality.
I was dazed.
Pulled an all-nighter?
Colored contacts?
A vampire?
One of the Kindred?
Or did he just have pink eye??
“King, do you intend to take it back?” the stone-faced man behind him asked.
“What else? Hey, Li Jiu, let me tell you-I feel like plants and flowers are too hard to raise. They die as soon as I try. What do you think about raising a human for fun this time?”
The man addressed as “King” spoke with great enthusiasm.
“Not a good idea,” Li Jiu said expressionlessly. “Human life is fragile. They die from a single zombie bite. Human cubs are even worse; they can’t forage, they only cry, you have to change diapers when they excrete, and their growth cycle is extremely long. If you leave them alone, they just die. When they get a bit older, they’re nothing but noisy.”
“Resources are scarce in the Apocalypse; they are hard to raise.”
“Furthermore, your temper is so volatile. You’ll likely get annoyed during the upbringing and swat it to death with one palm. All your previous hard work would go down the drain.”
The man gave a light snort, his words sounding lazy and indifferent. “I’m raising it anyway. If it’s really as much trouble as you say, then I’ll just swat it to death. If it goes down the drain, so be it. I have plenty of time to waste. I’ll just pick up another one that’s well-behaved and doesn’t cry.”
Me: “…”
That would truly be the most desperate way to die.
Knowing that this lord didn’t like noisy children, and wanting to survive as much as possible, I could only remain as quiet as a chicken.
“Tsk, this little thing looks so ugly when it cries.” He stretched out a long finger and unceremoniously poked my wet cheek. The force wasn’t heavy, but it certainly wasn’t gentle. “Snot and tears all over its face.”
I looked at him pitifully, my eyes soaked with tears, and let out a tiny sob.
The man pulled a silk handkerchief from his pocket and roughly wiped the snot and tears from my face.
The tender skin on my face was rubbed red and stinging by this novice “dad,” but I could only endure it.
Immediately after, the two of them brought me to a large villa.
The man prepared to enthusiastically begin his new hobby-
Child-rearing.
“According to the human world, I should be… your father?” The man smiled as he held me.
I stared unblinkingly at the man’s beautiful blood-red eyes and let out an “ah.”
And so, the man gained a brand-new identity-
My dad.
At this moment, he had not yet realized.
Raising a child and raising a plant were not even on the same level of difficulty.
