Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I’ve staged many suicides. The first time was three months after he first mentioned divorce. That day was our third wedding anniversary, but it was also that mistress’s birthday. I called him countless times, but I couldn’t get through. Finally, I sent him a photo of a bottle of sleeping pills and turned off my phone.
He rushed back soon after, looking frantic and disheveled. When he pushed the door open, I was sitting at the dining table in the dark. The table was covered with a feast and a large bouquet of roses, the two dinner candles flickering low. From the other end of the table, I smiled at him tenderly. “Happy third anniversary, Bai Yan.”
He was livid, screaming at me, asking if I was insane. He grabbed my arm and dragged me to the bathroom, pinning me down with a harsh grip before shoving a toothbrush down my throat with brutal force. I leaned over the sink, dry-heaving, while he continued to curse at me. “Where are the pills? How many did you take?”
I was a pathetic mess, yet I let out a raspy chuckle. My voice was hoarse as I looked up at him and smiled. “I lied to you. I didn’t take any.” I paused, then reached out and grabbed his sleeve with stubborn persistence. “Happy third anniversary. I bought you a gift. Don’t you want to see what it is?”
He looked down at me with a complex expression. Finally, appearing utterly exhausted, he pinched the bridge of his nose and asked, “I don’t love you anymore, Zhu Tong. Can’t we just let each other go?”
How could it be that simple? We met in high school, fell in love in college, and had a seven-year dating marathon before being married for three years now. My entire youth and all my love have been poured into this one man. And now he’s telling me to let each other go? On what grounds? I’m going to drag this out and keep him tied down. I want that woman of his to never have a legitimate status for as long as she lives.
So, I gazed at him tenderly and spoke the cruelest words in the softest voice. “Let you go? In your dreams.”
He stared at me without blinking. After that day, I could never find him again.
