Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Xie Mingchen didn’t have much to pack; there was still plenty of room in his medium-sized suitcase. I stared at the empty space, hesitating over whether I should stuff my own clothes in there and go with him.
On the off chance that he remembered what day it was when the time came, I didn’t want to hear him say “Happy Birthday” over the phone.
Just then, Xie Mingchen, who had been sitting on the sofa playing on his phone, suddenly stood up. He kicked open the cabinet, pulled out the first-aid kit, and rummaged through it until he found a box of medicine, which he tossed into the empty spot in the suitcase.
I saw clearly that it was motion sickness pills. “Why are you bringing those? You don’t get airsick.”
“They’re for Chen Cheng. She said she didn’t have time to get any.”
There were so many things wrong with that sentence that I felt a sudden surge of blood to my head, leaving me momentarily speechless.
Strictly speaking as a matter of business, Xie Mingchen truly couldn’t miss the tenth-anniversary celebration of one of the company’s major clients.
But what was Chen Cheng-someone with absolutely no background in this industry-doing going along?
Was she going to win over new clients? Or was she going to navigate the social minefield of our competitors to fish for information?
“I’m taking her to see how things work, broaden her horizons,” he explained. “That way, she’ll be able to handle things on her own in the future.”
The way he said it made it sound so simple. There were thousands of people outside submitting resumes just to get a foot in the door of this company, and countless employees inside straining their necks to climb the corporate ladder. Why was it her turn to “see the world”?
And why did President Xie have to personally trouble himself with taking a blank slate like her and molding her until she could stand on her own?
I took a deep breath, suppressing the agitation in my chest.
“I should still be the one to go with you. There will be so much networking at the anniversary party; a young girl won’t be able to handle it.”
“Your health isn’t great. You should stay home and rest. Be good, and wait for me at home.”
His words sounded like he was looking out for me, yet his gaze was too stingy to even spare me a second look. Before I could say another word, he had already lowered his head to look at his phone.
His expression was pleasant, his eyes crinkling with a smile.
I didn’t know when he had become so brazen about it-his body was right next to me, yet his heart and eyes easily looked right through me, ignoring me, drawing happiness only from someone else.
