Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Back at the dormitory, I couldn’t wait to find my roommate-my ‘Pseudo-Love Consultant’ who was actually a ‘Professional Single Since Birth.’
I looked at her with a heavy expression. “Babe, I fell into a river.”
She rushed over, panicked. “What happened? Are your clothes wet?”
I lowered my head. “I fell in love.”
A few minutes later, I was clutching my smarting arm and giving her a fragmented description of my encounter with Xiang Liangzhi.
An Xuan looked at me like I was a lost cause. “Who was the one saying that the ‘Queen of Loneliness’ should focus on her master’s and PhD?!”
“A man who drives a Maybach-is that someone we can handle? There’s a literal chasm between us!”
“Babe, chant with me: The wise do not fall in love; the Queen of Loneliness focuses on her master’s and PhD.”
I also felt she had a point, and the spark that had just ignited flickered out a little.
To my surprise, An Xuan burst through the door a few days later and pinned me to my seat.
She dumped her entire makeup bag out with a clatter and started applying foundation to my face.
“You didn’t tell me he looked like that!”
“What are you waiting for? Go for it! Charge!”
It turned out she had run into Xiang Liangzhi today when he came to sign the donation agreement, and she had seen the man in the flesh.
I had never been the proactive type when it came to feelings. I could talk a big game, but when it came time to actually do something, I was a total coward.
An Xuan spoke with heartfelt earnestness:
“Babe, think about it. This is how so many romance novels start. If other people can do it, why can’t you?”
“Rich, handsome, the overbearing CEO type, a refined gentleman with a hidden edge…”
Seeing her get more and more carried away, I quickly stopped her.
However, a tiny spark still slowly poked its head up in my heart.
I hadn’t seen Xiang Liangzhi again that day. After leaving behind those few stunning glimpses, he had vanished from my life.
An Xuan was right. If I didn’t take the initiative, our lives might never intersect again.
Things are what you make of them; even with feelings, I shouldn’t just wait around.
Lying on my bed, I looked at Xiang Liangzhi’s WeChat over and over again.
His profile picture was a gray totem with horns. There was a word on it, but it wasn’t English, and I didn’t recognize it.
After agonizing for a long time, I plucked up the courage to send a message.
What followed was a long, agonizing wait.
Would he refuse? A refusal would be so embarrassing. But we weren’t close to begin with, so a refusal would be expected.
What if he didn’t reply at all? Wouldn’t that be even more awkward?
On the bright side, maybe he would agree.
Ten minutes felt as long as a century. Every time a notification sounded, my heart skipped a beat.
Finally, his profile picture jumped back to the top of the list:
[Okay.]
I let out a muffled howl and bounced up.
My internal radar for destiny was ringing louder than ever.
On the weekend, I got my wish and had lunch with Xiang Liangzhi.
Though what I chose was… morning tea.
Don’t blame me. With his net worth, could he possibly eat the same things I do?
And if I went where he ate, could I afford it?
Morning tea was exquisite without being expensive, elegant without being pretentious.
Perfect. I really am a little genius.
When Xiang Liangzhi heard my explanation, he laughed too.
“Yes, you are a little genius.”
His tone was doting.
Today, he was wearing a beige casual outfit, making him look soft and warm. Combined with that doting tone…
My heart felt like it was wrapped in cotton, turning into a complete puddle of mush.
Using tea as a substitute for wine, I raised a cup.
“For today’s meal, I want to thank Mr. Xiang for donating a large sum of money to my major. Hehe, now we have more research funding.”
I felt guilty as soon as I said it; this reason for inviting him to dinner was far too flimsy.
But between grown men and women, things are understood.
Even if I was just a naive kid in his eyes, he could have easily declined the invitation.
I wasn’t particularly good at making conversation, but with Xiang Liangzhi’s age and experience, he had dealt with all sorts of people. No matter what I said, he could keep the conversation going.
Even if I got carried away and talked too much, he would just listen with a smile, looking genuinely interested.
I was certain that from this moment on, I had truly fallen.
