Chapter 6
As the evening was winding down, I had drunk quite a bit. After watching the two girls I brought with me get into their car at the entrance, I finally looked down at my phone, which was now in the queue for a ride.
At this hour, the subway had already stopped running. Some people were calling for designated drivers, others were hailing cabs.
Knowing I’d be drinking tonight, I simply hadn’t driven.
My phone showed there were still a few passengers ahead of me in line.
“Wen Yuan.”
A man’s voice sounded a few steps away.
I turned and met Zhou Yanming’s eyes.
Almost instinctively, I smiled at him. “What a coincidence.”
Zhou Yanming walked over, lowering his gaze to look at me. “Pretty coincidental. Company dinner?”
I nodded.
His eyes fell on my phone screen. After a moment, he said, “Cancel it. It’s rush hour now-traffic’s bad. Even if you get a car, you’ll be stuck. I’ll give you a ride home.”
I wasn’t being coy, just a bit skeptical as I looked him up and down. “You’ve been drinking, haven’t you?”
After all, he was my best friend’s close buddy. I was debating whether to give him a quick rundown of traffic laws.
Zhou Yanming pointed to a car with its lights on by the curb. “I have a driver.”
“…”
Fine, I’ll just go along with you rich folks.
With a ride arranged, I quickly canceled my cab.
In the car, Zhou Yanming and I sat side by side in the back seat. He asked for my address.
“You seem to get along well with your colleagues,” Zhou Yanming suddenly said. “When you got in my car, wasn’t there a coworker who was worried I might be a bad guy?”
I paused.
The next second, Zhou Yanming chuckled lightly. “He seems to like you.”
“…”
It’s not just ‘seems.’
Zhou Yanming’s tone wasn’t probing-he sounded quite certain.
I stared at the car ceiling, my heart calm as still water, and let out a quiet sigh, saying nothing.
Zhou Yanming asked, “What’s wrong? You don’t like him and he’s pestering you?”
After all, Zhou Yanming and I had only met twice. He wasn’t exactly someone I could confide in.
But I still spoke up. “He was my intern last year, officially joined the company this year. During his internship, he made a lot of small mistakes. I was always catching him out, and the things he handed in were sent back and forth over and over. Out of all the interns, I criticized him the most. If I were him, I wouldn’t have joined this company.”
“What was he thinking?”
Who knows-he not only came back after graduation, but even confessed to me.
The company doesn’t forbid office romances.
But I’m just not interested.
After hearing this, Zhou Yanming laughed. “Did you used to scold him? How did you scold him?”
