Chapter 5
Meng Ling resisted cooperating.
But Qi Jie had a thousand ways to torture her.
As the client boss, Qi Jie hosted a team dinner. Meng Ling arrived late, fined herself three drinks. The mood was good until Qi Jie chuckled lightly.
“Miss Meng, drink if you want. What’s to fear? Even if you drive and hit someone, don’t worry.”
I floated beside Qi Jie, seeing Meng Ling’s face turn ugly.
Her colleagues froze.
Qi Jie lowered his head, fiddling with the ring on his ring finger.
He continued casually: “But one family producing one killer is enough, right?”
“…”
The group squirmed in awkwardness.
Meng Ling forced a pale smile, stood, and left the restaurant, leaving her isolated silhouette.
I heard her breathing tremble.
On day one, Qi Jie exposed her family scandal in front of colleagues. From then on, she’d be gossip fodder.
She didn’t fight back or confront him; she endured his revenge.
Qi Jie lost his appetite too, leaving after her.
Late at night, he collapsed on the bed, stroking the ring, habitually leaving space on his right side for me.
I didn’t know if he missed me or hurt.
I only knew he’d stared at Meng Ling all night, unblinking.
His mind was full of ways to get back at her.
Qi Jie insisted Meng Ling join him for an island tour.
He gripped the wheel, flooring the accelerator on the empty coastal road. Meng Ling sat shotgun, terrified, her face ashen.
Her lips quivered: “Mr. Qi, can we stop…”
Qi Jie ignored her, eyes cold.
The more panicked she got, the more he enjoyed it.
He savored it almost sadistically.
After a while, the car stopped.
Meng Ling’s legs buckled; she opened the door and knelt, vomiting at his feet.
Qi Jie looked down, grabbed her, and shoved her into the driver’s seat: “Your turn to get revenge on me.”
Meng Ling’s fists clenched: “Sorry… Mr. Qi, I can’t drive.”
“Can’t?” Qi Jie settled into shotgun, like it was the funniest joke. “What’s stopping you? Drive, crash—your family’s mental history is your license, right?”
Meng Ling bit her lip, starting the car under his pressure.
Qi Jie hurled the harshest insults, mocking and belittling her.
I listened in a daze—
In my memories, Qi Jie was a pure-hearted kid.
He always smiled at me, even flashing a peace sign mid-fight.
Now, he was gloomy, hell-bent on dragging Meng Ling down.
I saw her sweating, pale as paper, silent.
After a bit, Qi Jie tired himself out.
He leaned back: “Just crash into a roadside tree. We’ll all be free.”
Meng Ling paused, forcing a stiff smile.
“Mr. Qi, you’re the client. I’ll get you back safely… Besides, you haven’t accepted our family’s apology yet, right?”
Her tone held a counterpunch.
I sat in the back, glancing between them.
Ah, don’t worry—he’ll not only accept it but apologize for today’s torment.
At the resort, Meng Ling slid down, supported by colleagues.
“The doctor said no driving! What happened… Mr. Qi, sorry, Meng Ling has a psychological block. Her therapist advises against vehicles. For future tasks, assign us instead!”
So her trembling wasn’t just from Qi Jie’s scare.
Qi Jie said nothing, staring at her.
Spotting the female lead’s vulnerability, the male lead felt pity?
But he smirked: “Your family has excuses for everything.”
