Chapter 3
I didn’t wake up again.
I still floated by Qi Jie’s side. The system made me follow him, watching him and the female lead fall in love step by step.
Right now, they were enemies.
The system said it would set up a hero-saves-the-damsel scene to bring them closer.
For over ten days, Qi Jie holed up at home, sleeping from morning to night, until his friends couldn’t stand it and dragged him out for drinks.
His friends urged him to move on, to shake off the shadow.
Qi Jie kept his head down, silent. I could tell he hadn’t even entered the shadow.
Late at night, Qi Jie and I—one human, one ghost—walked the quiet streets.
Rapid footsteps approached from behind. Before I could turn, the person passed through me and grabbed Qi Jie.
“Please help me!”
That familiar voice.
“Someone’s following me. Please help… Mr. Qi.” Seeing it was Qi Jie, Meng Ling awkwardly let go.
I turned—sure enough, a shady man lurked in the distance.
Qi Jie glanced at Meng Ling and suddenly sneered: “He definitely didn’t mean to follow you.”
Qi Jie walked on. Meng Ling cautiously stayed by his side.
The stalker hesitated and backed off.
Near the police station, Meng Ling relaxed and thanked Qi Jie.
He asked her: “Were you scared?”
She looked confused: “Not anymore.”
Qi Jie flicked his cigarette, pointing to the intersection ahead.
“Then tell me, when my girlfriend stood there, watching your brother speed toward her, was she scared?”
Meng Ling followed his finger, shuddering: “Where is this…”
“This is where your brother killed someone. Look at the ground—there’s still my girlfriend’s blood.”
Meng Ling felt like she’d escaped one predator only to face another. Qi Jie’s vengeful glare made her fingers tremble.
I watched their standoff sadly.
It was hard to imagine that Qi Jie, who hated Meng Ling so much now, would one day hold her and call her “baby.”
