Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Jiang Wan was friendly toward me-though perhaps she was that way with everyone.
Gu Jingshen had arranged a welcome dinner for her at the best French restaurant in the city. She didn’t seem to have much of an appetite and barely ate, but when we were saying our goodbyes in front of the restaurant, her stomach let out two embarrassing growls.
So, I suggested she come home with us and let me personally cook her some late-night snacks.
Gu Jingshen was already loath to part with her, so he naturally jumped at the chance. Jiang Wan hesitated for a moment, but under my calm and sincere gaze, she eventually nodded.
While I cooked, she insisted on staying by my side to help-though it was more like she was just getting in the way. This woman was proficient in all the fine arts, from music to painting, yet she was hopelessly clumsy when it came to basic kitchen staples.
Hailing from Suzhou, she preferred light flavors, so I carefully washed the vegetables, beat the eggs, and simmered a fragrant bowl of Silverfish Soup with water shield.
Jiang Wan leaned in close to me; I could practically hear her swallowing. “Heavens, it smells amazing… I haven’t had this in seven years.”
It was exactly like this-she would walk into my trap without the slightest hint of suspicion.
I calmly said, “It’s ready,” and lifted the bowl. She happily reached out to take it.
Timing it for the exact moment of the hand-off, I intentionally let go. The bowl abruptly flipped, and the scalding, steaming soup splashed all over me. A patch of bright red blisters immediately flared up on the back of my hand.
For someone who had died eight times, this pain was nothing. The cry of agony that escaped my lips was pure acting.
Jiang Wan was startled, and Gu Jingshen came running at the sound. He took one quick look at the mess on the floor before grabbing my wrist and pulling it under the faucet.
“…I’m so sorry,” Jiang Wan’s voice drifted from behind us, weak and lacking confidence. “I didn’t have a firm grip… Where is the first aid kit? No, I should call an ambulance…”
She was making far too much of a fuss.
Enduring the pain with forced tears, I lifted my wet lashes and looked at the silent Gu Jingshen. “It’s alright. Miss Jiang didn’t mean it.”
In the end, we did waste medical resources by calling an ambulance to treat my burns.
After Jiang Wan left, I deliberately acted stiff and unnatural. When it was time for bed, I broke my usual routine by turning my back to Gu Jingshen and lying as far away from him as possible.
“What’s wrong?” he finally asked in a low voice.
I remained silent, only letting my shoulders tremble slightly.
“Tell me.”
So, I began to sob softly, making it sound as real as possible. “Miss Jiang said… this was a lesson for me.”
Gu Jingshen said nothing. I pulled up the System data to check. Fifteen minutes later, just when I thought he had fallen asleep-
My success rate rose by ten percentage points.
